I heard Allen Vizzutti with the Nashville Symphony last night. I've got several of his jazz recordings, but hadn't heard him play his Emerald Concerto. Never heard him live.
He played the Hummel first. It was a mediocre performance. He seemed to have many of the same problems that the rest of us face. Chipped notes, unclean trills, etc.
Then he played the Emerald. GEEEEZ! What an amazing performance. His complete command of the instrument is astounding. I wonder how many players there are in the world who can perform that piece respectably in public?
Afterwards, he hung around and signed autographs and talked with the fans. It is refreshing to see someone who can perform at that level and is still a nice person. |

Thanks for the review Mike! I saw Vizzutti in St. Peter Minnesota several weeks ago and he had a great performance. There is a certain quality to his performances that some of the really great players lack. Vizzutti has such a human quality to his performances. And it seems like he is willing to play at a level that the audience can connect with unlike the many "musician's musicians" out there.
Many of my favorite peformers I would classify as "musician's musicians," but honestly those people aren't keeping the art alive for us (even though they contribute A LOT to the art). It's really the performers that cater to a larger audience that ensure the survival of our music. Seeing Vizzutti live really gave me the impression that he isn't out to promote himself, his way of thinking, or anything. I get the feeling he is playing because he loves it and because he likes share his music with people. Simple as that.

Hey Man,
Great to see you got see such an amazing musician live. I played two concerts with him this summer, one with a Wind Ensemble and the next one with the North Carolina Symphony Orchestra. Let me tell you man, when he did American Jazz Suite(NSCO) and Rising Sun(WE), both of those pieces were just absolute monsters to be dealt with. I have nothing but the highest respect for Mr. Vizzutti and not only for his virtuoso trumpet playing but for his innovative and amazing Music writing. He's part of a very rare breed and I can only hope that I can play half as well as he does when I get to that point in my playing career.
