How does one become a repair man? Is it all apprenticiap (agg, spelling!), or are there musical instrument repair schools?
Thanks,

Ash,
I met a girl just last week who said she was taking some classes on instrument repair at the University of North Texas in Denton. I'm not sure if it was just elective classes or a degree program.
I'd imagine apprenticing would be the way to go.

Yes, I am currently in the instrument repair class here at the university of North Texas. Apparently, these sorts of classes are rare in most schools, and my teacher has said that usually it is an apprenticeship at a regular shop to learn the trade. Just try talking to some local music stores that rent band instruments and they may either have an in-shop repair or they most likely send their work to a local outside contractor. Either of those sources may be looking for help, especially during the summer before marching band. It could be a good way to get in the door of repair and learn the skills on simple student horns...and then advance up later. Hope that helps!
