Marching band when its pretty cold outside

when i had marching band i found it hard for my lips to buzz when it was cold out. i could hardly place a middle E (4th space) and i got tired quickly. i made sure that my mp was warm and my lips wet but it was so hard. i still don't know what happend

Its because it was cold that you were having big problems. Its a normal thing. Just like if your generally cold, your muscles will tense up. Your lips are muscles, so the same applies. Extreem weather conditions is almost impossible to play well, will seriously downgrade your performance.

In '94 I marched in the DCI All Star Drum & Bugle Corps in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day and it was COLD!!! We had people's valves freezing up while we were warming up that morning in Central Park. It was rough to get through, because the Obbligato Lead Soprano part was NOT east under ideal conditions, much less in the cold weather!

You might try using a plastic mouthpiece for cold marchng band days. Someone on the this forum suggested the Mad Max mouthpieces sold at bestproducts.com. I bought one for my son and it seemed to help and it sounded good. I bought a 5C but it seems to be more like a 7 and the cup seems a little shallower. (which my son did not mind since it made the high notes a little easier)
