FYI - This topic is also cross-posted on the Mouthpieces forum...

Wondering if the Bobby Shew Jazz/Lead mouthpieces from Yamaha are a good investment. I typically play on a 3C and am very comfortable with that piece, but I'm looking to get into more semi-professional jazz gigs, as well as potentially some jazz/big band lead work and musical theater. Would either of the Bobby Shew pieces be a good fit for me? If so, which would better fit my needs?

Definitely ask your lesson teacher before messing with your mouthpiece.

The Shew Jazz is very similar to the 3C
BACH 3C vs. YAMAHA BOBBY SHEW JAZZ

The Shew Lead is quite different

For me, the rim for a Bach 3c and the Bobby Shew Jazz pieces are extremely similar. Having a similar rim helps quite a bit when changing mouthpieces. I think of the Bobby Shew Jazz as a 3D, and the Bobby Shew Lead as a 3E, if you will. Both of them give a bit of an edge in the sound, which helps cut through the band.

The only things I tell students is that sometimes there's a honeymoon phase with the Shew Lead. It can feel great when you are fresh, but if your lips swell up, there isn't much room for them to vibrate.

It's always best to try it out, or borrow one from another trumpet player for a week.
