|
|
Recently, I was going through some trumpet method books and saw about one that it was originally written for French Horn. It was a well-known book, not obscure, at all. But, like a dummy, I went on to other things and now can't remember which book it was.
Does anyone know what this would be? Thanks, K- _________________ "If you don't live it, it won't come out of your horn." Bird

Wild guess
The Art of French Horn Playing
by Philip Farkas
I think that was on the trumpet reading list when I studied under Robert Grocock at DePauw |

Thank you, Andy, but that book was written for French Horn but not transferred to a trumpet book.
Farkas (the author) later wrote a book based on this book called "The Art of Brass Playing", but it's not written, first for Horn, then trumpet.
An example (and this is only to illustrate) is if someone had originally written Arban for French Horn then modified it for trumpet. _________________ "If you don't live it, it won't come out of your horn." Bird

Concone was for voice. Kopprasch was for horn. _________________ Bach trumpet artist-clinician

This was a linear developmental book like the Mitchell, etc. That is, a developmental book who's exercises progress incrementally in difficulty. Not a collection of etudes, per se, but a developmental method. Could it be the Charlier "Complete Method for Trumpet"? _________________ "If you don't live it, it won't come out of your horn." Bird

I don't know if you're one of those folks who have something against doing business with Timothy Quinlan. If you're not, it may be worth taking the time to look through his site. I recall reading a product description that indicated a particular progressive method or set of etudes was originally written for horn, then adapted to trumpet and enjoyed great success or acceptance as such.
Maxime-Alphonse? I wish I remember. I think the book was written a French or (francophone) Belgian pedagogue, peer or contemporary of Charlier. Guess I'll have to look myself to be sure. _________________ Enjoy the journey. |

Found it. From the preface of "Complete Method for the Bb trumpet by Theo Charlier":
"Its original title targets this method at the French horn player, but the exercises and teachings . . . suggest that this work should remain as a method for all valved instruments."
Thanks for your input, folks. _________________ "If you don't live it, it won't come out of your horn." Bird

That's interesting, I was not aware that Charlier wrote a true 'method book' specifically for French horn.
I wonder if the content of the original book was changed to be more appropriate for trumpet, or if the original content was already suitable for both horn and trumpet. _________________ Most Important Note ? - the next one !
KNOW (see) what the next note is BEFORE you have to play it.
PLAY the next note 'on time' and 'in rhythm'.
Oh ya, watch the conductor - they set what is 'on time'. |
