I want to buy a new practice mute.
There are many posts about it but they are a bit all over the place.
Shall we do a small poll?
PS: please comment it I'm missing some model that it's worth mentioning. |

Used a Yamaha Silent Brass for many years but then it suddenly ceased to be, into thin air. Mr Murphy?
However as a replacement I bought the Schh Mute and I am very satisfied, as is my wife _________________ Cornets: mp 143D3/ DW Ultra 1,5 C

IF.. big IF. I use a practice mute, the Best Brass Nano Warm-Up (fits into a harmon) is my current go to.. Easy to carry (lives with my mutes), doubles as a buzzz aid, and among the quietest.

For many, practice mutes are a tradeoff of quietness, intonation and stuffy/more open-blowing. So. keep that in mind, even asking for clarification as you read the results.
I've tried a lot of practice mutes and here are my results.
There are two issues with practice mutes, for me.
First, there are some popular mutes which reduce the sound considerably but produce a metallic buzzing sound. These drive me crazy.
Second, I live in an apartment where any sound bleed is not tolerated, so I need the most sound suppression possible. And sometimes, intonation is a tradeoff.
As an aside, I don't like the way the Ssssh mute protrudes, so that's another trade off.
I personally use Best Brass and the mute section of Yamaha Silent Brass.
If anyone knows of a quieter mute that controls intonation, doesn't protrude from the bell much, I'd like to hear of it. _________________ "If you don't live it, it won't come out of your horn." Bird

Divitt is my favorite I’ve ever used. I think people who search for the “quietest” mute are either too worried or must have infant children. For me the Divitt is “quiet enough” (I’d describe it as a quieter Harmon/bubble mute). If you’re playing it behind closed doors at home, in a hotel room, or even in an airport terminal waiting for your flight, no one is going to care at all.
It’s the most free blowing and in tune practice mute I’ve ever seen, and that’s what I care the most about. |

Yamaha Silent Brass. I like the original system better than the current one. Use the electronics, I use phones, not ear buds. |

I do not have infant children. I do live around people with children's mentalities, and I do have to deal with their sensitivities. Early on, I got negative feedback for practicing in my room and was told by the Director to stop. This is not my imagination. _________________ "If you don't live it, it won't come out of your horn." I didn’t mean to imply there’s no need for practice mutes without infants, just that seeking out that “quietest” mute is usually just sacrificing playability for volume when you’re already at a low enough volume it doesn’t matter for 99% of people. |

That will probably work for many, but gives that tinny sound I personally don't like. _________________ "If you don't live it, it won't come out of your horn." Bird

I'm still using a very old Shastock Whispa Mute and still really like it. Its amazing what the player can hear and what no one else can. |

I got this Mute Adapter yesterday evening and have given it an initial try. First of all, it works in my old Harmon Mute, and in the Protec Liberty Harmon mute I have, but NOT in my Jo-Ral or Soulo Harmon Mutes as the stem hole in those is larger than the Mute Adapter o-rings.
Comparing it to my Wallace Practice Mute (which has been my favorite for a while), the KGU Mute Adapter in the Protec Liberty mute is actually a little quieter, and seems to have about the same amount of resistance as the Wallace...and intonation is quite good. I'll do some more playing using the KGU Mute Adaptor and will provide any additional impressions. One thing I really like is that I can leave the Wallace out of my case and carry just my Straight, Cup and Harmon with me... _________________ Best Regards,

I use the old reliable Humes & Berg practice mute and see no need to upgrade. I did try a Divitt practice mute in 2022, but it kept falling out of my bell. |

Luckily, I don't need a practice mute often. Dillon makes a knock-off of the Best Brass practice mute, which I'm guessing is its equal. Way less expensive, looks exactly the same, works great, and travels in the bell of the horn - unless there's a K&M stand in there.
The Mute Adapter Jhatpro mentions is good too. It fits into almost every Harmon-style mute. I also like the Wallace practice mute. I've got the black H&B snub-nose practice mute, but it won't stay in the bell.
I'm surprised nobody has mentioned the Dennis Wick practice mute. Not long after we were married, my wife bought me one. I've often said "Always give a gift which you yourself can enjoy!" Decades later, Jane can sleep through my practicing. Am I a lucky guy or what?! |

Quick Update:
I used the KGU Mute Adapter in my Protec Liberty Harmon last night after getting it placed for minimum resistance (Placement in the stem hole makes a significant difference). It worked well overall. Still more resistance than no mute (as expected), but works as good or better than the Wallace. In addition, I asked my wife if she heard me playing (she was down the hall in her office, and I just had my office door closed), and she had no idea I was playing...I played for over an hour and she didn't know.
Additionally, the adapter in the vintage Harmon Mute (brand) does not work as well...not sure exactly why, but I can't get the resistance to a decent level for me. _________________ Best Regards,

Same here. And it doesn't blow back like so many practice mutes. _________________ BKA! Mic Gillette was my mentor and friend.
