Bach is taking forever on my custom cornet and waiting on it is killing me. During this time the Flugel bug has hit me and I have my eyes set on a Martin Bohme flugel. Originally I wanted a Snaffhorn but it was replaced with the Aura. Now they have several models and I'm wondering how they compare to each other. I'm looking for the amazing dark fluffy sound and not sure a lighter weight horn is what I want eventhough Jlandress has a Nubes Septum in stock.

Has anyone here had a chance to compare his flugels lately and if so how do they compare to each other?

The Martin Boehm website provides some sound samples for the Nubes Septum and the Aura -- does that help? (My apologies if you already know this.)

Yep I already know that, but it doesn't really help much. The descriptions don't really help much either. That's why I really would love to hear from someone that actually played them if possible. I did send off an email to Martin and hopefully we can chat a bit before I purchase if nobody here has any experience with them.

Thanks for the reply..

From your signature it looks like you’re located in Tennessee. You’re talking about a flugelhorn that costs over $5,000 here.

Wouldn’t it be a good idea to just go to New York and try them all at J Landress Brass?

I’m only saying that because I’ve read a lot about how one horn compares to another in the past and upon playing them in person, they were sometimes the exact opposite of what folks described them to be.
How people perceive sound can vary greatly.

Josh only has a Nubes Septum in stock.

I was able to talk with Martin today, and with what I'm looking for sound and playing wise, he recommends the Auro with a red brass bell over the Nubes Septum.

We are now out of stock of all of Martin's flugels. We do always have them on order and they tend to go pretty quickly. I love the Auro (formerlly Schnaffhorn) but also like the Nubes Septum. The Auro is definatly a bigger, darker and bolder flugel than the Nubes. I find the upper range is easier on the Nubes if you are wanting to play higher and it has a smaller more focused sound with less spread. I would compare the Nubes and Auro as comparing a Bach 37 to a Martin Committee.

I prefer the 72 bell over the 37 and the 239 over the 229.

Then it sounds like the Auro is the horn for you. Shoot me an email if you want to get on our list for the next ones we have in order.
