I picked up an old cornet a couple weeks ago and it had an Olds 3 cornet mouthpiece included. The guy I bought it from told me the horn is from the 30s/40s, so I assume the mp is from a similar timeframe. Not being familiar with that mp, I did a little online research and realized that there's not a lot of information out there about it (at least not as far as specs).
What I was able to find came from the Olds Central website (https://olds-central.com/) in their collection of old catalogs. The 1939 catalog provided this information about the Olds 3 mp: 0.632" inner diamter, medium deep cup depth, 0.140" bore. It also said that this is known as the "Recording" mp.
Other than that, there doesn't seem to be much info out there. I played the mp and it's actually not too bad. On my 1958 Conn Director it plays pretty easily and lets me play above the staff fairly well. But..., I'll caveat that by saying that I've only been playing that cornet a month or so (it's my original horn from decades ago and it had to be fully refurbished before it was playable again), so I don't have a lot of cornet experience again.
So..., just curious if anyone else has any experience with this mp or know any of the other specs on it. _________________ Richard H

Richard, thanks for the links. The Olds 3 mp does have a fairly small cup, but for me that seems to work (I play a Purviance 4*K4 on my trumpet). I have fairly thin lips and I'm also rebuilding my chops after decades of not playing, so for right now a smaller/more shallow mp is comfortable and works. I played it yesterday on my Conn Director at the end of our concert (an hour's worth of John Williams soundtracks (lots of high trumpet on my Severinsen) and then finished with an encore of Sousa's "Hands Across the Sea" march) and that mp worked well.
So I guess like everything else on trumpets and cornets, it's what works well and feels good to play. _________________ Richard H

What is the cornet it came with? I'm a fan of early Olds cornets, and 30's models are quite rare. As you probably saw on Olds Central, Olds cornets took a larger shanked mouthpiece, up through about 1956: SN: 189610. You can test if your 3c is correct for the horn -it should insert about 7/8”.

Sadly, it wasn't an early Olds cornet, it was a Gretsch Pathfinder. Still cool in its own way, but... _________________ Richard H
