I have a great recording of Mahler 3 with Zubin Mehta and the Israel Phil recorded in March of 1992. The trumpet playing is spectacular! Does anyone know who was Principal in Israel at that time? I'm pretty sure it was before Bamonte or Balio got there.

I know Glen Fischthall of San Francisco was principal in Israel under Mehta. I can't be sure if it wa him or not, but I do know he was there for a time.

He was, but back in the 70s. I believe he joined SF in 1980.

I believe that that trumpeter would probably be Robert Frear...Great player. He lives and works in LA now.

Great - thanks for the info. Do you know if he played on any other Israel recordings?

Not sure about the Israel recordings...if you are looking for another recording, check out the older NY Phil recording. Johnny Ware plays the post horn solo....absolutely spectacular!!!!!!!!! And, the Bernstein/NY recording where Phil Smith plays is amazing. Joe Alessi sounds great, as always!

Hi,
I studied with Robert Frears in the late 80's while he was 1st in the IPO (got to play assistent 1st with him on Holst planets, great experience!). If I remember correctly, he left before 1992 and maybe Ram Oren was then 1st. Ram used to play 1st in the Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra and then moved to the IPO. I got to play 4rth trumpet in Mahler 3 when he was still playing 1st in the JSO and he played wonderfully, great sound and tremendous endurence. He was (I think) one of the first Monette-man in Israel.
