Questions on having private lessons with Mr. Bill Adam

I wish to study with Mr. Bill Adam at Bloomington regularly. I have been accepted by the Bloomington campus of IU (not in the School of Music yet but another major). Under what conditions would he accept people as his students? Can I be guaranteed of having the opportunity to study with him as his private student? Thanks for helping me out on these questions, for their answers constitute the majority of my deciding factors.

Mr. Adam has been retired from IU now for a number of years, so it is not possible to study with him for credit through the school. He still does a remarkable amount of teaching at his home in Bloomington (especially for a man of 86). It should be possible to get a lesson most every week. You'll just have to call him to set it up, go over to his house, & pay him.

If you want lessons through school for credit you will have to get in with one of the trumpet faculty (John Rommel, Ed Cord, Joey Tartell) or one of their grad assistants.

FWIW, there are a couple of other pretty darned good trumpet teachers in town if you're interested, including Dominic Spera and myself.

Having lessons counted for credit is not a big concern for me. I am thinking about doing a double major at IU if I decide to go there, that is, trying to transfer into the School of Music.

Would Mr. Adam play during lessons?

What would be the reason to study with him other than any other teacher?

What is the lesson fee like (need to know to discuss my plans with my father)?

It is absolutely worth it, if really want to learn to play the trumpet. And considering his experience and expertise, his rate is extremely reasonable. It would be a bargain at twice the price.

I'll have to pay for my own lesson fee. I'll need to work alongside of my studies. How can I do so? What are the possible opportunities?

I am not sure if it is a secret, but I paid $70 for a one hour lesson.

Bring your mini-disc, too. Most of what he says doesn't crystallize until later, and it's the stuff he says in passing that makes the biggest differences.

Might I be able to get a part-time job where I can earn $70 a week?

How long does it take to drive from Urbana, Illinois to Bloomington, Indiana? Are there any public transportation where I can do this? (I'm asking this question for considering an alternative where I can still study with Mr. Adam)

Champaign to Bloomington is between 2.5 & 3 hours. FWIW, Louisville and Cincinnati are closer.

I was in school at IU during the 1982/83 & 83/84 school years and finished my degree in summer sessions in 1986. I gave my master's recital in spring of '87. I was a jazz major and AI. I also studied outside of school with Mr. Adam from 1971-76 and have had a hand full of lessons with him since I finished my degree.
