Who out there knpws about Jonah Jones? He was big commercially in the 1960's and was known for his muted playing. I had an album he made with the Glen Gray orchestra which was really a studio recording. I remember that his playing was incredible.

Only CD that I have of Jonah Jones...is his quartet album
"JUMPIN' WITH JONAH"

It contains 16 cuts and was his third Captiol release and in term of jazz repertoire and performance, this was considered one of his best.
fun stuff on the trumpet was his forte' (he sang lots of stuff also...just like Louie and Eldridge...his human voice is an aquired taste thing but you hear his love and style coming through.
These songs are ever so brief. Never over 3 minutes...he does what he does ever sooooooooo well...and gets OUT leaving you beggin' for more.
For example a few favorites to me:
No Moon at All
Jumpin with Jonah
Its a Good Day
Night Train
A kiss to build a Dream on.
the blues don't care who's got em'
and each song is a treasure...for sure.
Ha....This album was recorded a year after I got out of high school. 1958...GAD'S THAT IS OLD!!!!
But still......Jonah is a player who had sooooooooooomany gifts.
His big huge open tone, mastery of various mutes and unique style of impro. master of the gimickie concepts...He always programed variety in his songs to include as many fans as possible.
Even in his mid 90's he sill often played and entertained....how was that for a long solid and beautiful life.
Long live his memory.

I used to listen to Jonah a lot when I was in high school. He was a good bridge between Louis and other swing trumpet players. I thought he had the prettiest lip trills out there. Really controlled and lots of chops too.

Jonah was a nice jazz player with a warm lyrical sound. He made some earlier recordings that were very advanced for the time...and like someone said earlier, he was sort of a bridge between Louis Armstrong and some of the later bebop players.

Jonah made his mark playing popular commercial type tunes where he played many different kinds of mutes...seldom played open trumpet.

John
