I am a junior in high school and currently doing some college research. I am interested in these two schools and was wondering if anybody has had any experience with these schools and how they feel about the teachers, etc. Thanks. |

You will get a great music education at these Wisconsin schools:
U.W. Madison - John Aley
U.W. Whitewater - Dr. Frank Hanson
U.W. Eau Claire - Bob Baca
U.W. Stevens Point - Bob Kase
All these guys are incredible players and teachers. |

Oops. I forgot about Kevin. Me very bad......
I can personally vouch for Professor Hartman, as he and I were undergrads together at UW-Whitewater. Great player and teacher.

George Vosburgh and Neal Berntsen teach at Carnegie Mellon. You can't go wrong with that two-some and the PSO right down the street. |

I noticed the Carnegie Mellon website says that Anthony L. Pasquarelli is the trumpet teacher at the school so I was surprised to find out that the teachers are George Vosburgh and Neal Berntsen. Is the website correct or outdated? Thanks again for the help! |

Mikey,
You did your undergrad at UW Whitewater? What a great place! I spent seven Bands of America Summer Clinics there in the 80s as a director and later as a low-level clinician. Is the Red Lantern still there? I remember Whitewater as the only university town I know that you can walk across blind drunk and know you'll get home safely.

Yeah, I had a great time at Whitewater. I was there from 1981 to 1985. Took 5 years to get my undergrad degree (too much partying and bopping sorority girls)
The drinking age was 18 back then, so there were many college bars, with lots of happy hour and dime taps. Each bar was populated by a different sorority, so you got a nice variety. I lived on campus for the first 2 years, and yes, it was no problem finding your way home stinking drunk.
However, I must also say that I got a great music education there. I studied with Barry Hopper and Dr. Frank Hanson. Dr. Hanson is still there as Professor of Trumpet. The spring of 1982, my music fraternity, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, started a tradition of putting on a musical revue called "Celebration". I am happy to say the Xi Pi Chapter of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia has kept this tradition alive for the past 22 years!
When we did get bored with Whitewater, it was a short road trip to State Street in Mad Town, but those stories are for another time
Now, since the drinking age is 21, most of the college bars are gone, and the town is much quieter. ( I hear the overall GPA of the music school went up considerably).
Do check out Whitewater!
Mike

I studied with Aley in high school, and he's still one of the best teachers I've ever had. Madison's a great city to live in too. Not so many performance opportunities in town though. |
