Film composer Elmer Bernstein died today at 82.

This is sad, both Bernstein and Goldsmith within a month of eachother.

Wearing my youth orchestra director hat, we occasionally invite guest conductors to work with the kids. One of my conductors programmed a suite from the Magnificent Seven and asked if we could invite the composer of the film score, Elmer Bernstein, to conduct the orchestra. The Philharmonic, the orchestra performing, is our entry-level orchestra.

I said "Go for it". I didn't really think it would pan out imaginging we'd get a polite response saying "No, thanks". Imagine my surprise when we got the response saying "Sure!".

He came and combined it with a visit with his daughter. The kids loved him. He was a dynamic conductor, easy to follow, and demanded much from them. The performance was fabulous and I had dinner with him and his daughter afterwards. He was a consummate gentleman and we loved having him.

Thanks for the music, Elmer.

I've done some of the most successful musicals of all time and for that I am grateful. I am most grateful for my opportunity to have performed "West Side Story" in Basel, Switzerland in 2002 and the beginning of 2003. Every moment of that musical was a blessed treat for me due to the genius that was Elmer Bernstein.

With great admiration and respect,

John Mohan

He wrote some great things. Mag 7 and Great Escape were my favorites that we did with our brass quintet.

John were you thinking of Leonard Bernstein? (West Side Story)

Elmer Bernstein? West Side Story?

You played that show for how long? Check the upper right hand corner of your music.

Speaking of Lenny, they are releasing the historic Young People's Concerts on DVD in September.

Hey there!

Somebody kindly sent me a Private Message about this and I was going to run over to this topic and get rid of my mistake, but, what the heck - it's kind of funny isn't it? So I'll leave it up on the forum.

I was half asleep when I wrote what I wrote (it was after 1am) and I guess my brain short-circuited a bit.

One third asleep now,

John
