|
|
Just a little announcement for anyone in the Phoenix area on the evening of September 26 (Sunday, 7:30 pm, School of Music).....
I'm performing a recital with my colleague Sam Pilafian at Arizona State University. Hope some of you can join us! (Tickets available in the lobby.)
We will alternate tunes. Sam will play two tuba sonatas (lesser known ones for a nice change) and I will play BOUTADE by Gabaye, ARIA AND SCHERZO by Arutunian, LEGEND by Enescu, and AIRES ANDALUCES arranged by Mendez. We will close with an arrangement I did for trumpet and tuba (with piano acc.) of Mendez' arrangement of TICO-TICO.
It is a chance for you to hear my two new Severinsen "Distino" trumpets. I love them. You can get an amazing array of colors from them.
You will also be surprised by the Enescu. It will probably be done differently than you have ever heard or seen it done before.
If you go, please come backstage afterwards. I want to put faces with some of the posters on TH.

Dave, that is a wonderful program. Now if you were were still here in Illinois, I would be there.
Aires Andaluces is one of my favorite Mendez solos. For those who have never heard it, it is rather long and is a gorgeous piece of music with some very different requirements on the soloist.
Here's a question Dave, did you think Mendez would like the Destino? I know it is on my short list of dream horns.

I KNOW he would have loved it!
The ease of playing is unlike any horn I've ever tooted on. It has unbelievable soft response.....very quick. Notes lock in instantly.
Mendez really loved his French Besson. I have heard that he used that horn in many of his recordings, even though the Olds was in his hands on the album covers. The Destino has the ease of flexibility, response, and variety of tonal colors that Mendez looked for in the Besson he owned.
BTW, Doc sent a Destino C trumpet to Phil Smith to try. He has had it for about 9-10 days now. Phil reported back that he loved the horn! (The term I heard from the Severinsen people was that he "flipped" over it.) I am VERY curious to learn what Smith thinks of it in the orchestra.

Wow, such an amazing recital by 2 amazing players so close to home! I am going to do my best to be there. Quick question though, about how much should I expect for ticket prices, just wanna make sure I bring enough! Also, is this something I should try to secure tickets for say tommorow, or would I be safe picking them up as I walk in sunday, I'm unfamiliar with ASU's recital hall size. Thanks! |

I have to admit I am not completely sure of ticket prices for faculty recitals. I think prices vary from $7-10. No problem in getting tickets in the lobby just prior to the program.
This particular auditorium (Katzin Concert Hall) seats 300-350 or so. It should be mostly full.
Hope you can make it!

Is there a way to get a recording after the recital? (Living 2000 miles away is kinda hard to manage)

Recording? I don't know for sure.
The ASU classical radio station always records faculty recitals for later local broadcasts. I'll have to ask. |

It would be fantastic if this was recorded. One of the biggest problems with living in the UK is that I hear about all these great US-based recitals and concerts and only get to hear about them afterwards when everybody raves about it on TH.
The pieces you are playing are ones that I would love to hear, whilst Mr Pilafian's tuba playing (especially Travelin' Light) is required listening for any of my tuba students (he has scared many a UK beginner tuba player - but they all enjoy the music). Which sonatas is he playing? |

Sam will be playing the sonatas by Bruce Broughton and Trygve Madsen.
Anything he plays will be great. |

Mr. Hickman, how late do you think the program will run? I'd like to bring my children (they do well with classical music) but don't want to keep them up too late.
Thanks,
Mike. |

Much too late for my kids, but I'm certainly looking forward to coming hear both you and Sam. The last concert I attended at ASU was when Don Smith played his doctoral recital (I was the one there with the fussy kids). This Sunday will be a real treat. Thanks for posting about it (I always seem to miss the really good stuff even though it's just up the street). _________________ Derek Reaban

Dave:
Hey, you should post this on the calendar on this site, point your browser here:

and the rest should be self-explanatory.
Wish I could be there!

If anybody who plans to attend this recital lives at all near McClintock and Ray, I would really appreciate any offers of a ride home. I am unable to drive due to poor vision and it's a little too late to have my kids out.
Thanks,
Mike. |

Mike,
I can certainly offer to take you home after the recital. I live at Kyrene and Warner so this is right in my neighborhood. I'm planning to say hello to Mr. Hickman after the show so let's plan on meeting then.
See you Sunday evening. _________________ Derek Reaban

Thanks, Derek. You made my day. I'll meet you backstage. I shouldn't be too tough to spot. Probably not many 6'7" guys walking around with a white cane.
See you Sunday. |

Wow, simply incredible performance! The range of tonal colors and virtuosity, just fantastic! Not enough can be said about your playing, truly a treat. Although I know he doesn't check these boards, it would be a crime not to speak of Sam Pilafians tuba playing. Wow such emotion, and things I didn't even know were possible on a tuba! Your duet with him on Tico Tico is something I don't think I will soon forget! |

Thanks, Bachstrad! Glad you enjoyed it. We had fun.
I will pass your comments on to Sam at lunch tomorrow. I agree. He's got to be the best tuba player on the planet. |
