In my opinion if you want to be rich, do what rich people did to become rich. The choices maychange after the money is already there. By the same token, if you want to be a great player - do what the player did to become great. Again the great player may no longer need to focus on those exercises/techniques he needed to earlier on in his playing.

I would say that if you want to become a great player, have a qualified teacher determine what your deficiencies are and then create a plan to overcome them. This will be different for everyone.

I agree with Pedaltonekid up to a point.

If you want to be a good player you (and your teacher) determine your deficiencies and develop a plan to minimize them. They will never be totally eliminated.

If you want to be a GREAT player you must also determine your strengths and figure out an artistic approach that enhances, amplifies, and celebrates those strengths.

Too often we worry too much about not doing anything poorly and we forget to try and develop the things we do well.
