Well this is something...I'm pretty sure Gene Watts never sang in a foreign language with the Canadian Brass. Maybe this is where Synergy will make its mark...

Don't know about the state you guys are from.....
But, if you pulled a stunt like that in Texas......we'd get real ugly with you.

That is absolutely pathetic. Synergy is a disgrace.

Pretty cool - it's great that they're having fun and drawing people in. It was surely part of a whole concert of variety, so props to them. "Classical music" needs a lot more of this. Check out the great stuff Boston Brass comes up with; they've left an international trail of highly-energized young musicians and adults.

It's great that they are trying some new styles but Latin music isn't for everyone...

I know this will probably seem biased since I played with Synergy for many years, but in their defense, this was likely a requested thing. I played this festival with Synergy and they had requested something like this while we were there and we simply didn't have time to put it together. If a presenter asks you to play something, generally speaking...you play it.

Beyond that, they really don't need a defense. They are having fun and so is the audience. At one time people said (and there are probably some people who still do) that Canadian Brass was/is a disgrace, but if it wasn't for CB, brass quintet probably wouldn't exist as a viable genre for brass players today. Hate if you feel the need, but in the end thank Canadian, and Synergy, and Boston, and any number of top level groups playing fun music, or making music fun the next time someone pays you to play in a brass quintet. Just sayin...

I am not sure whom is the one disgraced. Just speaking for me, Synergy is a very entertaining and fun group that I love to watch. I got to spend a few minutes with Bobby Thorpe after one of their concerts and was very encouraged to be a trumpet player.

I have seen some puritanical rants about them here on Trumpet Herald. Fine, puritans are entitled to opinions too. There are a lot of interesting groups that play to entertain: Mnozil, Bosen, Boston, Gomalen, Canadian, Empire, and others. I would, and have, gone to concerts by several of these groups, and Synergy is welcome here any time. They can even do La Bamba, and "here" is in Texas. If they are not your cup of tea, don't watch them.

When this topic has come up in the past I believe that no one has criticized the choice of music played by the group(per say), or the fact that the group is 'getting music out there' in an educational setting, etc...Any person playing a horn has had to play selections that are 'cheesy' or down right 'selling out'. The criticism to date, right or wrong, has centered around the groups playing ability, time, intonation, articulation, etc... in relationship to their reputation.

As they say down this way, I don't have a dog in the fight, but for those that do, at least argue/defend against the criticisms, and not a phantom argument ( red herring) of musical selection.

There is a strong tradition of brass quintet in Boston, MA. Lot's of groups there and new ones come and go every year.

Empire
Atlantic
Boston
Paramount
Majestic
Triton
Bala
etc, etc, etc.....

Synergy is just another brass quintet.

Some of these groups are awesome. Many are very very good!
Some just fall in love with the idea of being a "pro" brass quintet.
Let's not lump them into the discussion of Empire, Canadian, Mnozil, Gomalon, etc.... because thats does everyone a disservice. Not fair to the great groups....and, unfair to Synergy.

It's like how I created a zillion minimun wage jobs in TX. They're jobs and someone's got to do 'em.
Synergy plays to a different crowd then Canadian Brass. Someone's got to do it.

Besides.....David Ohanian has nothing on the dudes Texas size 'Fro!

Well, I have to be honest and say that I knew that posting that video would stir things up a bit. However, I wasn't really expecting... well... that!! At this point I'm just hoping that thlurker thinks that I'm a decent player!

Rick: Thanks for the mention of Paramount. I miss those days (but not the salary!)

JM: Which Shires C did you settle on? I'm gonna place an order soon and would appreciate your expertise.

Seelan:

Best,
JD

Jon, I miss you doing Paramount Brass (though I imagine that the salary is probably better these days)! I listened to Tapestry the other day...good stuff!!!

Cheers,
Chris
