|
|
Hi all,
A fellow member dropped me a note asking after Chicago School teachers around Seattle. I could swear I've heard about a couple, but can't think of their names! I blame lack of sleep, or maybe senility... Anyway, can somebody help me (and thus him) out? Looking for within 150 miles of Seattle.
Thanks! - Don _________________ Don Herman/Monument, CO

I know that Larry Knopp, principal of the Vancouver Symphony, sometimes plays with the Seatle Symphony, at least he used to sub in sometimes. Those 2 cities aren't that far apart, although there is an international border to cross.
Larry studied with Cichowicz for a long time and teaches with him every summer at Domaine Forget and subs in for Cichowicz as trumpet coach at the National Youth Orchestra of Canada. He is a hardcore Chicago style trumpet player.

he's also a SUPER nice guy. I had the pleasure of being a TA under him at Marrowstone Music Festival. He is a superb teacher who is really personable. Vancouver is only a 2 hour drive from Seattle (if you drive like I do). I guess it might be 2.5-3 if you drive normally. Is there anyone closer? |

Yes Larry Knopp is an excellent teacher...but..unfortunately for us West Coasters he's currently doing an Acting Principal stint down in Malaysia...that's very far from Seattle
He 'may' return next year...we'll have to wait and see. |

There are a bunch of great trumpeters in the NW. Here's a short list to look up for lessons:
David Gordon (principal in Seattle Symphony)
Rick Pressley (also in Seattle Symphony)
Jerry Webster (teaches at Portland State Univ. in OR)
Ben McDonald (MONSTER player in Olympia, WA - also teaches some at PLU)
Dave Bamonte (member of the Oregon Symphony)
I'm not entirely sure about the whole "Chicago School" methods, but I know that the above mentioned musicians are fantastic.
Hope this helps! |
