|
|
I'm going to my first rehearsal for Guys and Dolls tonight. I think I'll be playing lead. What horns should I bring? Any doubling on flugel or picc? I'll bring a variety of horns if nobody knows but it would be nice to have an idea of what to bring. Also, anyone konw which mutes are used? |

I don't remember using a flugel for Guys and Dolls. But I would pack all my mutes including a bucket. And a stem for your Harmon. |

Thanks guys.
Bucket mute. Yuck. I'll probably just use cup and maybe some foam pads. I guess I'll have to find the stem for my harmon too. Haven't used that stupid thing since I bought the mute in grade 10 and was screwing around with the wa-wa sound.
I think I'll throw a picc in my bag just in case. I remember playing a few shows many moons ago and wished I had a piccolo with me. I didn't own one at the time but I suppose I was as good a trumpet player then as I am now. *shrug*
Thanks again. |

I hate bucked mutes as much as you, I just use a hat, clip it to my stand and when I need it I lean in, gets the job done perfectly. Plus in cramped pits it saves me the time when there are quick changes. |

On the lead part, be ready for tons of chop-killing Salsa. That's probably the hardest thing I ever had to do in High School. Given the opportunity again, I'd love to play the show. I've been thinking about giving my name to some of the community theaters and telling them that I play shows just to get back in the groove of things. _________________ Trumpet: Bach 180LR, 72 bell

Chop-Killing Salsa? Huh? C'mon Havana is the best chart in that entire book.
The hardest part of the thing though is in fact in Havana (I think), when "Mr. I think the missionary chick is hot" and "Mrs. Missionary chick" have their dialog the trumpets have to do these "blurbs" between the dialog, which is rather difficult to time considering how fast it is and the conductor can't cue it easily. Boy, how many times I had to cue the two people next to me with my bell. |

But you would agree that the little dialog/trumpet exchange is a nice run for your money though. |

Well G'damnit, I disagree with you so much that I have to say you're the biggest crockpot idiot I've ever seen in my life!!!
Tee hee hee, just kidding. Actually, I now recall those dialogues you speak of. Somehow, we got lucky and synched them every time the same way. Again though, keyword luck, divine intervention, a skull shaker in the back, whatever you want to call it, we nailed it everytime somehow. _________________ Trumpet: Bach 180LR, 72 bell

Like I said earlier with how I did that, cues off the bell, the first show we did the conductor said he could see sweat dripping off of our eyebrows during that lick, later shows (I think 8 more) ended up being a breeze/ |

You WILL get sick of playing "Follow the Fold"!!!
I've done the show so many times, next time I get called for it, I'm
going to say "No, but I'll gladly audition for the role of Nicely-Nicely
Johnson".
Enjoy!! It is a fun show.

How true!
Doing a run of this show a few years ago we thought we would go all out in that one - we brought cornets along for every time that tune appears. As the shows progressed we started doing variations on it - by the end of the run, Herbert L. would have been proud of our performances - the MD loved it (he's another trumpeter!) |

Outstanding!! So did we. By the end of one of the runs I've done of
this show, we had it going in an all out dixieland street-band style. _________________ "NEVER practice...ALWAYS perform" (Bud)

we made the band on stage sound horrible, sorta jokishly.... Everyone chose a different key and added charm (and fun) to the show because the band 'sucked' so much.....
I've seen several takes on it...
My favorite memory was when the bass player wanted to pick up a recording of the tunes to groove and learn with - he got mixed up and got the African American Revival of the show... Put a nice soulful gospel feel on the whole show... and added a few songs too... worth a glance if u have some $ and luck finding it.... |

Played this show recently. Tons of fun with the right cast and pit! Played it several years ago and it was a real drag (wrong cast and a very un-swinging pit). You will need a Bb and an old beat up cornet (Follow the Fold needs that "Salvation Army Band" sound).
Depending on the size of the pit you might want to bring a flugel. I played a LOT of bone q's and the flugel had the right sound. No need for a picc.
Have a little fun with the call-to-the -post that kicks off Fugue for Tinhorns - I don't think it's supposed to be played straight.
Havana is a great number. You'll have a gas with it. Just hope the MD and choreographer don't cut too much of it (happened in our run several years ago). The chart as written is pretty good, but it's a lot more fun to improvise some salsa-ish licks. Get your shake (lip trills) working. Sounds even more authentic when you take it up (think Arturo - it IS Havana, after all). As the lead, you have to be on top of the dialogue and don't wait for the MD's cues.

It's a good show to have a lot of fun with. The charts are not too difficult, not a lot of horrible key signatures. Pretty good book with a fair share of funny lines.
As Paul said, Follow the Fold will start to wear on you after the first or second rehearsal... How do you ever get it out or your head?
Enjoy the run. Let us know how it goes.
Keep swinging,
Matt |
