This may be old news to everyone else but, it excites me since I live within 15 minutes of UAB (University of Alabama at Birmingham) but, according to a press release on their website, Leonard Calendaria will join their faculty as Visiting Professor and artist-in-residence. Excerts from the press release are below.

Candelaria comes to UAB from the University of North Texas (UNT), the largest music school in the nation, where he was a Regents Professor of Trumpet. Candelaria has earned international recognition as one of the United States’ most distinguished artists and teachers and as a virtuoso performer on both modern and historical instruments. He has presented concerts and master classes at universities across the United States and in France, Germany, Mexico, Norway, Russia, Sweden and Taiwan. Candelaria holds a doctorate of music from Northwestern University and a master’s degree in musical education from UNT. In 1990 Candelaria was the recipient of the Shelton Excellence in Teaching Award by the Faculty Senate of UNT. From 1993 to 1995, Candelaria was president of the International Trumpet Guild, a global association of trumpeters whose 7,100 members represent more than 60 countries, and he continues as a member of the ITG board of directors. |

Matt,
Dr. Candelaria is a fantastic player and teacher. You are very fortunate to live in the area. Make sure you take advantage of it.

| Any one know what happened at North Texas? Who is taking his place, why is he leaving? Is Keith Johnson still there? |

I attend Samford University, just down the road from UAB, and I believe his wife is taking a Piano Pedagogy spot here. That might be the reason, if it is his wife. The new prof is a lady by the last name of Fouse with a DMA from UNT. Also, they both visited Samford last spring. Just an interesting note, the UAB press release states that he is "visiting professor of trumpet and artist in residence." The visiting term leads me to believe he won't be there long. Also, I've heard that the trumpet prof at the University of Alabama is retiring soon. They're not known for the trumpet studio right now (dominated by low brass and horns) but, it could be a good gig if the right teacher got it. UA has a top notch wind ensemble.
Just rambling. . . _________________ --Matt--

I had heard a rumor that Leonard was considering retiring from UNT. I don't know how they are covering the rest of the load this year. To my knowledge Keith Johnson is still there and Jay Saunders has been helping with some of the jazz majors part-time.
Faculty hirings at major US universities can be very complicated. There are lots of legalities regarding how widely the post needs to be advertised and for how long, labyrinthine procedures for union and government compliance, etc.
The rumor I heard was that Leonard only announced this move late in the year (probably after his wife was assured of her new post) and it was too late to mount a national search. I suspect UNT will have some sort of one-year solution in place and they will search for his full-time succesor this winter for next fall. I know that this is what is happening here at IU with Marie Speziale going to Rice. We think we solved it for one-year and will do a big advertised search this winter. |

I studied with Leonard for one year at UNT during the late 70's (back when it was called NTSU). He taught me as much about life as about playing trumpet.

I just finished 4 years with Leonard at UNT and I don't think I would be half the trumpet player today if it weren't for him. He's great fun and I've enjoyed being able to study under him for my Bachelor's. He'll be missed at UNT, but UAB is lucky to have him.
