Anyone got experience doubling on valve bone or bass trumpet? I've got one (bass trpt) coming and want to know about how to size a mouthpiece for it (in case I don't like the one that comes with the horn). _________________ Jeff Helgesen

I use a Stork 1.5C on trumpet, a Kanstul 1 on flugelhorn, and an old Conn 12C on valve bone. I tried smaller bone pieces, but was unhappy with the sound. I can't start playing on the bone first. Eventually, when I do, I have to be sure to use a totally different setting than for the trumpet or flugel. Also, if I play too much bone, consecutively, my trumpet playing gets interesting. Finally, get ready to hear people rave about some sax player they heard who doubles on flute, and how incredible this is, totally unaware of how much more difficult going from trumpet or flugel to bone and back is. |

I double majored on Euphonium and Trumpet... MUCH TO THE CHEGRIN OF MY PROFESSORS ON BOTH HORNS .... BUT!!!
I started on trumpet and then got braces -- Swithed to Euphonium and played a 6 1/2 AL Bach for a long time then a schilke 52... a 6 1/2AL is a comfortable piece and would be good to start with then find your way.. AKA as the bach 7c for trombone players Went back to Trumpet in grade 9 and decided to be proficient on both.. I have performance degrees on both. IMHO I am a better trumpet player but not by much!!
The settings are different the muscles are different!! Be careful to play trumpet like trumpet and Trombone/Euphonium like Trombone and/or Euphonium.. Few can do it well!! I was one and I know two other guys that were grat at it .. We got so good at it, that we could go back and forth Trombone to Trumpet mouthpieces -- doubling the way trumpets switch Piccolo/Flugel/Trumpet in the same piece!!
I had an act on a cruise ship for a while where I played Trombone Euphonium, Flugel, Piccolo, Bb Trumpet and Eb Tuba in the same performance sometimes in the same piece.. The only people who appreciated it were other brass players they would all come up at the end of the show and ask how I could play all the different horns like that, THE AUDIANCE HAD NO IDEA THEY JUST LIKE THE SHINY HORNS AND SONGS I PLAYED WITH THE BAND... good luck

Anybody tried the old Al Cass doubler pieces?
The horn I'm getting (the Kanstul Marching Trombone/"Flugelbone") comes with a Kanstul 12C mouthpiece, I believe, though I I'll be hog tied if I can find the specs for the mouthpiece... _________________ Jeff Helgesen

I use a Bach 16EW. The Extra-Wide seems to give lots of cushion for a good seal. All the embouchure is in my chops with this setting.
The cup and is about the size of a large alto horn piece and the tone is pretty nice. My low range is limited, upper range decent.
I bought a Parduba Triple Star a few years ago but it didn't help. It has the Parduba Double Cup. The larger outer cup is the size of a nickel (I tried, it fits & gets stuck). The inner cup is a "V".
The upper range I get is astonishing but I was unhappy as some of the notes just don't speak on my Valve bone. The low range, non-existent.
Many recommend the Schilke 40B. I've never tried one.
If you're interested in the triple star, contact me for a trade or something. |

I have a couple of bass trumpets. On one, I use a Schilke 47B, which is on the small side. On the other I use a custom made Callet V. Fridman mthpce. of equivalent size. I used to use a Schilke 42, which is even smaller... jbqd |

Can't make specific comments on mouthpieces, but I did at one time have an acquaintance who played trombone, French horn, and tuba. There is a wide range of mouthpieces. He seemed to play all just about equally well.
I asked him how he managed it, and he just shrugged his shoulders and said that all he really did was adjust mentally to the instrument in question. He evidently played with an embouchure that wasn't particularly mouthpiece-sensitive. |

I thought they usually had a 'bone player do that!
In terms of 'bone mouthpieces, the 12C (I don't know the Kanstul, but I'm assuming it's similar to a Bach 12C) is a small mouthpiece, but might work; a lot of jazz players use them.
Myself, I use a 6-1/2AL, which is pretty much the most vanilla, straight-down-the-middle 'bone mouthpiece there is. (I also use a mid-range trombone for most playing.) Jazz players think it's a funnel, classical guys think it's tiny. On alto 'bone, I use a 7C, which is bigger than the 12C but smaller than the 6-1/2AL.
