I don't completely understand how to use to the chord markings during an improv solo. Are supposed to play only the notes in that cord throughout the entire length of that measure(s)? _________________ "Playing jazz for a living sure beats the hell out of stealing." -John Sheridan

i practice chord tones a few ways.
here is the first way i learned:
root 3rd 5th 7th 9th 11th 13th and then back down.
in major
minor
dominant
minor 7 flat 5 (half dominished)
remember the harmonic series: there is a raised 4th. therefore, when practicing the 11th (4th), raise it by a half step.
so,
in c major, you'd have: c, e, g, b, d, f#(!!!) a, f#, d, b, g, e, c
in c minor: c, e flat, g, b flat, d, f, a, f, d, b flat, g, e flat, c
in c dominant: c, e, g, b flat, d, f#, a, f#, d, b flat, g, e, c
in c minor 7 flat 5: c, e flat, g flat, b flat, d, f, a flat, f, d, b flat, g flat, e flat, c.
apply that to all the keys. if a range issue comes up, play the root 3rd 5th normally, then take the 7th 9th 11th and 13th down an octave.
there are other patterns to use with chord changes as well. this is the one i learned first. _________________ http://onlinejazzclass.com |

Check out his Creative Beginnings book. It costs about $60 but will give you enough to work on for a couple of years. Best book I have found yet to help beginners play jazz.

Hey,
I've got something I typed up for students I've taught improv too that just explains what all the letters and numbers mean, I'll send it to you via e-mail. |
