to answer the question of which to avoid, I can't stand the King student horns. I am not a big fan of yammies though plenty of people like them, I have noted that they are fairly inconsistant with slide fit and don't seem to hold up that well, don't like the valves... . not a big fan of the bach student horns either - they just feel clumsy. Getzens are ok, but I think the sound is a bit harsh and they seem a bit flimsy. imo, they all play like student horns. and after a few minutes, I need to get a fix with a real horn.
I haven't found any better than the Kanstul 610s. they have been out of production for some time. How good are they? they have monel valve, play in tune, have a good sound, slides fit, and they are built to last. Some days at the studio that is all I play, and it doesn't occur to me that I have a beginner horn in my hands. I just wish I could convince Zig to put them back on the line. We do still have a couple here at PiCK. Price is a whole lot better too than what music stores around here charge for other brand names-- they all charge full retail on the student lines.
thats my rant for today. oh yeah - stay away from Wal Mart, but you already knew that. I had a student come in with one Its a year old, and actually really doesn't play that bad. but the plating is already worn off the valves, and there are signs of rot in the metal. It will soon be unplayable and unrepairable. definitely disposable horns.
