John Wallace

In January 2002 John Wallace became Principal of the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama. Long acclaimed as a virtuoso trumpet player, his performances as soloist with leading orchestras and conductors and at major festivals and venues throughout the world have established him as a musician of enormous distinction. In 1995 he was awarded the OBE in the Queen's Birthday Honours in recognition of his distinguished services to music.

In February 2002 he became the first orchestral musician to receive the ABO Award from the British Orchestras as the individual considered to have made the most outstanding contribution to orchestral life in the UK. In March 2003 he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh.

Among the many new works he has premièred are concertos by Sir Malcolm Arnold, Tim Souster, Sir Peter Maxwell Davies, Robert Saxton, Dominic Muldowney, James MacMillan, Mark-Anthony Turnage and Stuart MacRae, a trumpet quintet by Sir Peter Maxwell Davies; and a work for two trumpets and percussion by Harrison Birtwistle. As concerto soloist he has appeared with conductors Neeme Järvi, Riccardo Muti, Sir Simon Rattle, Sir Andrew Davis, Yuri Termikanov, Esa-Pekka Salonen, Claus Peter Flor, Leonard Slatkin and the late Giuseppe Sinopoli. In addition to orchestral appearances, John Wallace has been greatly in demand as a recitalist and teacher. He has given masterclasses worldwide, has participated in Arts Council Network tours both in the UK and in Australia and has worked with the British Council in South Africa and Russia. In 1986 he founded the Wallace Collection, an ensemble devoted to the development of brass music and education and which fast became one of the world's pioneering brass groups.

John Wallace has an extensive list of recordings to his name. In addition to recording all of the major trumpet repertoire with the Philharmonia, he has recorded Malcolm Arnold's Trumpet Concerto (together with a trumpet and keyboard disc) in the Virtuosi series for EMI and concertos by Maxwell Davies and, most recently, James MacMillan with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra. With the Wallace Collection he has recorded a series of highly acclaimed discs the majority of which have been made available again under the group's own label.

John Wallace was born in Fife, Scotland and read Music at King's College, Cambridge. Until 1995, he was Principal Trumpet of the Philharmonia, a position which he held for nearly twenty years. Following his new position in Glasgow in January 2002, he relinquished the posts of Head of the Brass Faculty at the Royal Academy of Music and of Head Principal Trumpet of the London Sinfonietta. With Professor Trevor Herbert he is co-editor of the Cambridge University Press Companion to Brass Instruments and he is currently researching the history and development of the trumpet for publication by the Yale University Press.

Philip Jones

Philip Jones, trumpet artist and founder of the Philip Jones Brass Ensemble (PJBE) died on January 17, 2000, at the age of 71. Jones was principal trumpet of six London orchestras during his career. In 1951, he formed the PJBE, which was initially a quartet. The world-renowned ensemble grew to 10 members by 1970 and released 50 recordings. Jones achieved his goal of gaining the same recognition for brass soloists and ensembles that had previously been enjoyed by more traditional solo instruments such as the piano and violin.

Jones was born into a family of trumpeters on March 12, 1928, in Bath, England, and was a scholarship student at the Royal College of Music. His orchestral years included appointments with the Royal Philharmonic (1956-60), Philharmonia (1960-64), London Philharmonic (1964-65), New Philharmonia (1965-67), and BBC Symphony Orchestra (1960-71).

In 1986, after accidentally driving his car over his trumpet case, Jones made the decision to retire. He continued to teach, accepting a position at Trinity College of Music, where he worked until 1994. He also served as chairman of the musiciansÕ charity fund in 1995, having worked for the fund throughout his retirement.

Jones was awarded an Order of the British Empire in 1977 and the Commander of the Order of British Empire in 1986. He is survived by his wife, Ursula Strebi.

Jason Evans

Third-year undergraduate Academy student Jason Evans has just been appointed Principal Trumpet of the Philharmonia Orchestra. Jason takes up the post in March, succeeding his trumpet professor, Mark David, who relinquished the position after his appointment as the Academy’s Head of Brass.

Mark writes: ‘I always thought it would be a bitter-sweet moment when my job of 21 years was filled but I am thrilled and excited that it has been awarded to Jason, who is undoubtedly an extraordinary young trumpeter.’
