Hey guys! 2 Sundays ago, I had my first lesson with Mr. Adam. I have gotten so much out of that lesson. At first I believe it was a little overwhelming; maybe I was tired from performing that whole weekend. Though, taking all the things he said to me home, everything started to fall together soon after. I had been taking lessons occasionally from Joe Phelps in NC and decided to take his suggestion and go up to Bloomington. This has all meant a whole lot. Now all I have to do is find a time to go back!

I have been seeing Adam off and on since 1982. He blows me away every time.

Charlie,

Just curious. How much time did you put in on a daily basis for the last year in order to take second at NTC?

Well, given that with all school and the school music programs and everything else that I've been busy with, I have had a little trouble with time management in my practice. I think I had my piece definately for a year, though I tried to get at that one piece atleast 30 minutes everyday. A good day is an hour, with singing, listening, and especially to the piano part and how it all fits together. That is on that one piece. Were you at NTC Billy? I met a few of Adam's guys there, Karl Sievers, Greg Wing, and one other though I forgot. I bet you sure have learned a lot from being with him since 1982!

I wasn't able to be at NTC this year. Maybe next time. How mush time do you put in on practice time total? Not ensemble rehearsals, just you and the horn.

During the school year, I practice usually 1-2 hours a day. I wish I could say more Billy, though school work and school music get in the way a lot. The summer is a much better time, since I can go at it almost all day long.

You are doing well in the 1-2 hour range. Every day is the key. Keep blowing and get those lessons in, if not with Adam, Joe or another Adam student. Keep us posted.

PS what grade are you in?

I'm 16 and a junior in HS. I do not have the ability to go see an Adam student all the time, though its a real treat when I can. It's just too far of a drive out to Joe, though I do take lessons once a week from another well respected trumpet player and teacher. I'm happy with them, they teach me a lot about playing in orchestra and solo. Happy Easter!

Congratulations on the NTC! It sounds as if you are well on your way to becoming an accomplished player. You may wish to check out the Adam web site for the locations of other Adam students.

Charlie,
Congratulations on your success at the NTC and also for getting up to Bloomington to visit Mr. Adam. He's a wonderful teacher and human being, I owe him a great deal.

I noticed you're in Tennessee. How far from Nashville are you? If it's not too bad of a drive I'd be glad to sit down with you and blow through the routine sometime.

Good luck with everything.

Mr. Bailey,
Thanks a lot. Mr. Adam even mentioned you in my lesson, on when you and John Rommel played together. That must've been a great group. I'm from Kingsport (northeast), so yes a while away from Nashville, though occasionally I'm in Nashville. So, if I'm ever in town I'll get in touch, that would be great to do that. And by the way, I'm friends with your son Preston, he's a great player. Thanks Billy. see ya!

Charlie,
I grew up in Church Hill. Small world, huh?

I remember you from last year's All-State. Tchaikovsky 5, right? As I recall, you were cranking out the second part on that piece...you and Preston sounded great. That was, without a doubt, the best high school-age orchestra I've ever heard.

Next time you're down this way give me a call, we'll get together and play some trumpet. You can reach me through the Symphony office: www.nashvillesymphony.org

Take care and best of luck to you.

Jeff
