I know there is probably already a bunch of these topics but what model MiniDisc can send the music files to the computer to burn to a CD after a live recording. Also what sounds the best.

THANKS

Hi,
I have a Sharp MT877 with a Sony ECM-MS907 stereo microphone.
The Sharp is very user friendly.
Actually, I just plug in my cord to the minidisc and plug
the RCA plugs into the back of my C.D. recorder.
Regard, Jim

As long as you have an output on your minidisc, you can connect that to your computer to create a CD. Any minidisc player should work.

Depending on what you're recording, you may want to just go str8 to your computer.

Any minidisk will work. Some come with software to make it easy but then you may have to change the format of the files so it can be burned to a CD. As said above, if it has an output it can go into any computer with the right software. As long as your computer isn't a Tandy.

I think he's talking about a high speed transfer. If so, what is needed is a newer unit with HiMD technology. There are several available, and one of the cheapest it the Sony MZ-RH910 which can be bought for about $200. It does have a mic input.

While any audio unit with a headphone output can transfer the audio to computer, it must be done in real time. The HiMD will do a high speed transfer....about 80 minutes of music in less than a minute. Hope this helps....

Well, unfortunately there's no easy solution to this. I regularly talk with Sony about stuff like this as part of my day job. Basically, you can (as of very recently) transfer self recordings as digital files to your computer with the new crop of Sony MD players. But because Sony is so stringent on digital rights management, those recordings cannot be burned to CD (they're "protected" files). This is easily enforceable for Sony because the player/recorder requires you to use Sony's SonicStage software in order to do the transfers.

I'm not sure about the recorders from Sharp, though.

Sharp did not have high speed transfer the last time I used one (MD 99 series). You had to upload into the computer using a patch cord into the "Line in" analogue link.

I agree that the Sony system is fast but puts an effective "lock" on the files.

When you do upload, make certain you turn your sound configuration "off" or you'll end up with a mess of "bings" and "boings" on your recordings.

The advantage to the Sharp system is that their recorders do not seem to generate much "motor noise" when you are recording with a mic. The Sony unit demands that you put a short patch cord between the mic and the unit or you'll get a lot of background racket.

I have one of the new Sony Hi-MDs and I can transfer directly to my PC via USB and burn to CD using a wave converter recently released by Sony:

For details regarding the overall process - go here:

There are limitations and requirements but it can be done. I used it at my last concert and it worked great. Much better than using the line out on my old Sharp and dumping it to my hard drive via recording software.

Thanks Eric. I was going to post similar information but you did it much better than I could have.

For the money, if you don't have anything yet, the TASCAM POCKETSTUDIO5 is the best little bang for the buck. Direct to computer as MP3 files or record on Compact Flash Media Cards. It's 4 tracks and loaded with a ton of other goodies! It's also come down in price. JMO

Or you could use Audacity for free.
