Just received this Getzen 300 Cornet from an eBay sale.
I wanted to complement my trumpet (Conn V1 which I love) with a cornet.
Picked this one up for $41 + ship. I think it's a real good deal.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=7316368999&rd=1&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWN%3AIT&rd=1

When I first pulled it out of the box, I gave it a blow... ouch.
But Wow!! After seating the valves correctly (at least they were in the correct 1-2-3 order) and unsticking one af the Amato spit valves.... it really sings. Of course the valves are AWESOME, and the sound is too. Thank you, Mr. Getzen.

The serial number is 157387 - anyone know the age?

Nice looking cornet. Getzen valves are the standard.... very sweet.
Bret Getzen would be the guy to ask about the age. He hangs around here and may post on your thread.

I agree. These "student model" Getzens are utterly great horns. I own a 481 cornet, which I would not sell for anything. Interestingly enough, one rarely sees them on Ebay. Either they don't make many, or people do not let them go.

You got a really good horn. Great price.

Nice,, I used to have one of those. Got it from e-bay also for around $95 then 4 years later somebody bought from for $175.00 and also gave me a electric bass guitar. I could not resist it.

If you have any questions on the cornet, feel free to ask. I'll do my best.

As for why there aren't many on ebay, I couldn't say. Believe me, we build a lot of them. I just think most people hang on to them for a long time.

Thanks for the compliments. We do our best.

Looks like the horn I started on in 1965, down to the tan case. It had green velvet lining with a satin Getzen emblem in the inside corner of the lid. I have no idea what happened to it. I've been rehearsing with a brass band and wish I had that old horn of mine (I'm playing one owned by the group, a nice Besson). Getzen makes some of the best horns (I owned a Pro Custom trumpet) as well as THE best valves.

My final note on this thread (I think).
Just got a Bach 5C Megatone mouthpiece for this little $40 horn. What a nice sound, it really sounds great. Just thought I'd post, I had never used a Megatone in a cornet before, sounds real fine.

I also have one of these cornets and wouldn't part with it -- it sounds(and looks) just great for Dixieland. I wish Getzen would start making "long" cornets again!

Yep, with a deep well mouthpiece, you'd get a sweet sound just like Bix.

I had no need for a Cornet but had to have one just the same! I couldn't justify the ($) high end horns so I tried the 481( Even managed to stay married). What a fun little sheppards crooked horn!! Awesome horn that for me, playes like a high end intermediate horn.

Just got my Super Deluxe Copra Temp back from Getzen! What an awesome resto job they did on this little beauty!! I intended to make this a wall hanger with some of the other neat little tid bits I've collected, but just can't put it down!

These Cornets work really well for some of the softer Hymns I play on occassion. It's nice to step away from the Trumpet sound and hear something just a bit different.

It's fun having horns from a couple generations of the Getzen family!
These guy's are much more that awesome Horn makers!

Thanks Getzen Company
