Valve oil for the V1

Im using the al-cass oil now and I feel that I have to oil before every practice or playing session....dosen't feel right.

Any tips about a better oil?

I use 5 Starr. I don't have that problem.

I broke the valves in with Al Cass. It took a staggering amount of oil at first.

Even though I'm a rookie, I've already discovered that there are many different valve oils out there. I've been using Al Cass, too. I was told that it doesn't have a high oil content. I just sent for some Vaja.

You have to use Hetmans valve oil on that horn I have a Conn V1 !BR beautiful horn. Get Light Piston Oil # 1. My instructor knows one of the guys who designed that horn and he said it was made for Hetmans .

I think there is a post on Valve oils in the Horns Forum...Search valve oil and you should find what other people use...I've had some pretty good luck with Al-Cass, I also use Blue-Juice and Ultra Pure they're really good as well.

All of the V1's I ever tried had gummy valves. My suggestion would be to start off with the Hetman light piston oil. Really work the valves for a day or two with the Hetman light. Then Wipe down all the metal residue on the valves (and inside casings) DO NOT WASH, just wipe down. Then put on a fresh coating and repeat the process until your valves work properly. Maybe it will take several rounds. Then go to the #2 Hetman piston oil, or al cass or whatever oil you like.

I have never had a problem with Al Cass in any new horn with really tight piston tolerances. It's a very light oil, but since I tend to oil the valves every two or three days, how long it lasts is not an issue.

Blue Juice, on the other hand, just doesn't seem to last very long when I've used it in the past. It seems to have a very high evaporation rate.

My repair tech swears by all of the Hetman lubricants.

It might be useful for people to mention what instruments their experience is based on. V1 flugels? V1 trumpets? (They have a different valve block - whether or not this makes a difference is another question) Other horns?

I use Blue juice on all instruments at the moment. The V1 Flugel is fine with it. I oil the Flugel twice a week. The cornet doesn't get a lot of use, maybe once a week. The Trumpet valves are incredible and can go for weeks.

My old Besson 600 trumpet gets picked up every year or so and the valves work every time, straight out of the box.

Rich G: Agreed, Blue Juice does seem to evap relatively quickly, but since I too oil often the longevity isn't really an issue for me either.
I use Blue Juiceon my V1 and it is super slick and fast. Awesome valves.

I have both a V1 flugel and a V1 trumpet. I use Binak pro on both, with great success. During break-in, I had to wipe down the valves and swab out the casings every few of days. After break-in, I have been able to go for weeks without re-oiling or problems. In fact, I sometimes wipe down the valves and re-oil out of sheer guilt rather than need.

Binak has a mineral oil base, not petroleum. It doesn't evaporate like petroleum-based oils. Great stuff.

I use All Cass Fast on my V-1 trumpet. For the first few weeks the valves were slow, but now they are nice and smooth.

I have BLUE JUICE but I have never tried it on my V1.

Sorry, I picked up this thread from the Home page links and didn't realize it is a Cornet/Flug Forum.

My comments were for my V1 trumpet (BR). When I bought it new, the valves were a little sluggish and had a break-in period. I cleaned it very frequently and oiled very frequently. But, after a couple months the valves got faster and faster and are now the best I've ever pushed (although I have played some Getzen Cornets that also had very nice valves too).
