OK, I'm going to try my best to phrase this so it doesn't sound condescending towards anybody. I'm beginning to narrow down my options for grad schools, and I want to go somewhere where I can study with a Bill Adam student. I am sure that all of them are good teachers, because I have yet to meet an Adam student who is a bad teacher, but for narrowing down purposes, which teachers/schools would you guys recommend? Maybe the top 5 recommendations? IU is on the list, but I want to make sure I'm not putting all my eggs in one basket. The other requirement is that, if at all possible, I'd like to get out of Ohio. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks! _________________ Matt Miller |

I assume you're looking for a master's program. I also assume you are inclined toward versatility, rather than being a jazz or orchestra specialist. Correct me if those assumptions are wrong.
One problem is that lots of good Adam students teach at schools without extensive (or any) graduate programs.
The first good ones that come to mind for you to consider:
IU
UNLV
Oklahoma
Capital (Columbus, OH)
South Florida
Central Washington
Morehead St. (KY)
I'm sure there are others... |

Go to IU and study with Rommel. You can take lessons on the side with Mr. Adam. Maybe he will let you mow his lawn. _________________ Bill Bergren |

I'd lean toward IU, too. I've never taken a lesson from Rommel, but I hear he's a monster. The main reason for me would be the proximity to Mr. Adam. If he moved, I'd probably transfer. Good luck.

ps-I'd be thrilled if Mr. Adam let me mow his lawn. _________________ Michael Patrick Wall, Ed.D.

Pat-You are correct that I want to learn both classical and jazz playing. In the long run I'd like to specialize in classical playing, but I know I need to know both ends so that I can make sure that there's food on the table.
I don't want anybody to get the wrong idea: as of this moment, IU is at the top of my list. When I went out there in April for my lesson with Mr. Adam, I met Mr. Rommel and several of the trumpet majors there and found the atmosphere to be wonderful. I just know that it's tough to get in, and while I'm not trying to sell myself short, I don't want to end up like 2 recent graduates here who put all their grad school eggs in one basket and are now not going anywhere. That's why I'd like to know as many schools as possible...if that makes any sense. I may just be weird .
Also, does anyone know if Mr. Adam will be in town this summer, and if so, when? I've been told that he likes to go out to Colorado (sp?) in the summers, but with his health I was wondering if he'd be doing that this year. I ask primarily because I'd like to get out to Bloomington again and have another lesson with him. _________________ Matt Miller |

Hmm, I think that Mr. Adam is still around. I don't remember exactly, but I think last year it was June 11th or around then that he left?
Anyone else have a closer date? _________________ "Everyone should carefully observe which way his heart draws him, and then choose that way with all his strength." |
