I'm going to a big music store on saturday to try out a bunch of horns, after I decide which Bb im trading in for, I'd like to look at some C trumpets. I like the nice bright, presenting sound of C trumpets in churches and orchestra and stuff.. but I just cant get over the sound of cornets. Sometimes in wind ensemble I just think ''man! this would sound great on cornets instead!" (which makes sense, because the music says Cornet 1 up in the left corner). So heres the thing, I can only get one or the other ( C trumpet or Cornet ), my question is.. which will be more useful to me? I guess we will see what grabs my attention most while im playing up there (the store). But what do you guys think.

I say cornet. Get a C cornet.
It is very hard to beat the sound of a cornet!

I'm a cornet guy, but if I wanted something to play primarily in church or orchestrally, I'd buy a C trumpet. You're right, though - if the part says "Cornet", it should be played on a cornet.

I doubt you'll find a C cornet in stock at many music stores in the country.

Sure thing. You have A, Bb, C and Eb and even a picc cornet.
I am not sure the store you are going to has a C cornet... probably not, but if you can look elsewhere (on the web) you can get a nice one.

Really depends on the places & types of things that you play and the sound that you prefer (but you already knew all of that....). Have played both Kanstul & Getzen C cornets, and was truly enamored with the sound & quality of both.

cornet. definitely. it'll come in useful in those church situations too - don't forget that, by law, singers hate brass and so they're less likely to cringe hearing the cornet sound

But don't you enjoy watching singers cringe?

haha... aww but i like the singers in the choir... 2 days until i go to that store. most of my trumpet peers have told me to lean toward a C trumpet. then a couple of them told me they wouldnt know what to do either. and all my cornet peers (you guys...) have told me cornet. hmm... once again, i suppose what it comes down to is what seduces me first.

Just make sure that you're testing the cornets with a cornet (V cup) MP, and NOT with a cornet version of your tpt 'piece.

exactly - do justice to the cornet with the correct equipment, and play it like a cornet - i.e. don't just blow it like a trumpet, make lurve to the cornet

... if they ask you to leave, at least you'll know you've gone out in style

I say C trumpet, I uase it a lot in church and when playing in orchestras.
I don't think I would use a cornet in any group unless there were others playing them as well; just one cornet along side of a bunch of loud/brash trumpets will not sound right.
If in time you decide you need a cornet you should decide what sound you want to get out of the thing. With a shepherds crook cornet you will get a distinctively different sound than with a straight model. I prefer the straight model in band and orchestra work because the sound has more carrying power and is still rich and sweet but use my sc cornet in brass band.
