I'm playing Jolivet Concertino for some competitions coming up. Should I memorize that piece or not? One of the comps has a rule that says it is preferable to have it memorized but if it is out of the standard repertoire which is performed memorized, you don't need to.
Any thoughts? |

Yes, go ahead and play it from memory. I would consider Jolivet "standard rep" for trumpet, and it will be a LOT more impressive if you play it from memory and actually make eye contact with the listeners as you play. Your confidence will increase and the overall impression will be much higher than just well played but using a music stand.

| Play it by memory. It's our only slim chance of competing with those string types... |
