I have a pivot system 6 mouthpiece which is plastic. VIntage 1980 or so? It is not clear, rather a brownish-yellow color. I found it in the music building at West Chester University around 1981 or thereabouts. I asked around if anyone had lost it, and no takers. I kept it as an "all weather" mouthpiece for marching band. I never really used it for anything else, thinking it was just designed to be playable in the cold.
I visited the Pivot site, and found out about the charachteristics of the piece, and now am going to check it out.
Before, I just used it on my marching horn, but nothing else. I didn't really notice the sound, as I wasn't expecting much from the horn I was playng. I'll have to dig it up to see what it sounds like.
What were the advantages of these mouthpieces over metal?
