M: What is the function of the lower lip?
J: The lower lip is your control, the top lip is your reed that vibrates.

M: How is the movement of the lower lip?
J: ...pull in the lower lip, almost like up against the tongue.

Pulling the lower lip up against the tongue helps to keep the tongue beveled (comment M) because...

J: ...the tongue wants to flatten out.

J: The tongue flattens before it goes back, you don't have the bevel anymore. So what happens when you lose that, the lips will automatically close ... and the teeth are closing.

J: What is important about opening the teeth is that the lower lip in it's thickness can touch more tongue.

J: The reason that you close your jaw is to keep the lips together. That's the way of cheating.

M: How did you learn to keep the jaw open?
J: I think: the higher i will play the more i will open my teeth.

M: I don't feel that my top lip is engaged.
J: It's hard to feel the top lip. Don't worry about the top lip it's engaged.

M: Why are the lips collapsing into the mouthpiece cup?
J: If you blow to hard and you can not hold the position of vibration, the air blows the lips apart. That's why the beginners need a deeper cup.

More snippets:

J: All the sound you make is inside your mouth in order to get it out you must have very open teeth.

J: It is the compression of the air inside the mouth that makes the great players.

J: Music entails more then just playing high notes.

Marcel

A couple other classic Callet gems:

You blow, I spit.

Don't move your tongue to play; the lips move to allow airflow ...

Quote:
My greatest playing revelation came to me one day, October 13th 1970, when I was able to combine the old German French Horn embouchure of Einsetzen and Ansetzen. After 45 minutes of double pedal tones, I was able to play from double pedal C to double high C. This was done with very light mouthpiece pressure on my lips.

I might have some useful quotes. I took them from a workshop I had in Altenberge in 2003.

-Open your teeth to let the tongue out

-Lips move in the direction of the tongue, the tongue sets up the lips

-I like to start and warm-up on the low register, once that works try ’n take it one octave up.

-Slurs: push tongue forward, double up.

Some more (from a clinic in Denmark, 2004):

- The greatest challenge in TCE is perhaps to hold back.

- If one blow too hard or press and squeez the lips together in the high register, the sound suddenly cuts off.

- One must develop this balance (between compressed air and lip/tongue resistance) methodically and only ascend slowly in the register, keeping a good opening between the teeth all the time.

These quotes are actually short notes from a lesson a few years ago:

Teeth apart.

Throat open.

Bevel tongue.

Spit.

Breath.

Relax.

Don't pucker, tuck lower lip.

More lower lip in cup.

Tongue down, not out.

Q: "Is spit buzzing without the horn or mouthpiece a valuable exercise alone?"

Jerome: "Definitely very valuable."

Virtually every trumpet player, amateur and pro, needs more center focus and core to their sound.

"When done correctly, all compression occurs inside the mouth before the air hits your lips. The more inside your mouth you can make the compression the better. "

After 4 years that I abandoned the trumpet playing, a good friend, told me about Jerome Callet's Spit Buzz. I tried once...one week after I goes to buy my new trumpet.
Not only spit buzz helped me to play again but the C double pedal with the bottom lip out, still work for me in my every day warm up.
Now my playing is, again, a very great pleasure.

P.D. Sorry by my english.

From Mac Gollehon, "During all your practicing, use 'Zen-like' concentration to make sure the tongue never pulls back, not even a pinch. That's the key."

From Jerry, "There are only 3 things that can go wrong. First is overblowing. As the sound gets harsh and blatty the embouchure is breaking down. Beyond that, there are only 2 problems: either the tongue is too flat; it's not actually curling over. Or, the tongue is pulling back. That's it."

You must “spit-buzz” the air into your mouthpiece. Set both lips together with the bottom lip slightly inside and under your top lip. Curl the front of your tongue over moderately and place the tip of your tongue against the top of your raised bottom lip. Next, moderately increase the pressure of your tongue against the bottom lip until the top of your tongue curves up and contacts the lower inside of your top lip. From this position, spit a firm puff of air into the mouthpiece. The action is much like trying to spit a hair or small seed off the top of your tongue. Make this spit buzz firm enough so that your imaginary hair goes a long way! Practice this exercise away from your horn too. Ten minutes of spit buzzing per day will improve your performance far more than hours a day of “blowing more air” into your horn.

Great post from PZ. I'll add a little emphasis by re-quoting a line that I've personally found absolutely invaluable during my progress with Jerome,

"Ten minutes of spit buzzing per day will improve your performance far more than hours a day of blowing more air into your horn."

For decades I was preached the old "blow more air" concept and nothing could be more detrimental to serious development on any brass instrument. Most players will find Jerome's teaching in this area to be counter to everything they've previously been taught, but nothing could be more central to development of tone, range, intonation, flexibility, and power; after more than 30 years of effort, I'm certain of this. Get the tongue in the correct MSC position and spit, NEVER blow! Best to all, Kyle
