I saw this posted in the Recordings forum about the Carnival of Venice:
Quote: | I finally got a copy of it, and i'm having alot of fun playing it. It's not hard, the last movement kinda is, but the rest is cake. |
Cake. Cake, he says. I've been working on this for over a year, dreaming of the day I will be able to play it well!
Nuts! |

Ouch! How about when your teacher says, "The only way you'll make money with that horn is if you sell it." I got that one once, and I sure needed it. Made me realize I was over-confident and under-prepared. |

I have had two Trumpet Instructors tell me that I should switch to trombone!
Though I do think they were both just suggesting I was physically set up better for it, But the Trumpet was my first love! _________________ WAR EAGLE ! ! !

There are some young players out there who really humble my efforts and not one of them would call anything by Arban a piece of cake.
Sounds like a bit of schoolyard bravado.

lol that was me he quoted and please read posts. It was clarke's version, not arban's which is a whole lot easier!! lol i'd say the same thing about someone who called arban's "cake" haha though I understand that post. There are trumpet players at my college here who naturally tear it up with an unimaginable sound, and don't even have to try. ........madness........ |

You want humble, When I use to do gigs about 10/15 years ago they were fun and exciting. so I decided to practice a bit and go out and conquer the world. Man was I wrong! Got up on stage with a friends quartet and reallllly played like S$#@! I heard someone In the crowd say "I used to see this guy play years ago and he was pretty good, I wonder what happened!" But I kept fumbling along and walked away with my pride in a bag. So needless to say, Im praticing all the time and hopefully soon Ill be able to make a better impression. Lord knows the first come back wasnt that good. |

dcjacobson,
Hang in there!
There will always be someone who plays better.
Just focus on YOUR improvement.
When other people's playing ability de-motivates me...I just consider it as "noise" and I try to improve my playing to the best of my ability.
Remember, we all have different experiences...different practice sessions...learned different things...etc.
After seeing live concerts with Wayne Bergeron, Miles Davis, Chuck Mangione, Maynard Ferguson, Chris Botti, Rick Braun and Tony Guererro, I always tell my Wife..."After hearing them play, I'm not sure if I want to keep playing or practice more."
When I am really down on myself for bad playing....I always do the following...
1.) "Lower the bar" / lower the expectations I put on myself.
2.) Say to myself..."I'll bet I can play better than a person who has never played the Trumpet!
This makes me feel better for about (1) complete second.
3.) I analyze what I did wrong...what was the root cause...and what is the corrective action that will prevent the mistake in the future.
Just last Sunday, while playing the melody line of a simple piece with the Praise Band at my church, I came in (3) bars early.
It started with an ( bar rest...I didn't count off the rest...I just came in when I thought the Piano intro. was complete.
It took me several bars to recover...it was a "train wreck"!
After the service, I apologized to the Music Director and said...
"Don't forget...you get what you pay for...by the way...are you going to stop payment on my check"?
Knowing that I am just an amateur / volunteer Church musician, we both had a good laugh!
Hang in there and just have fun!!! _________________ God Bless,
