Just got the "Trumpet Spectacular" album (thanks, Prof. Hickman!) and...wow. I had heard stories about the Mendez Haydn, but this was still pretty interesting to hear for the first time. The intonation is flawed, but I've got to hand it to him, Mendez truely makes the piece his own. The dynamic extremes he uses are exciting and sound almost exotic to an ear used to dozens of very restrained, classical interpretations. The part in the third movement where he departs from the written page and doubles the first violins is thrilling!
the CD booklet doesn't say...when was this recorded? _________________ Daniel Gianola-Norris
