I'm thinking about purchasing a piccolo trumpet. I play in a brass quintet with a Bach Strad b flat trumpet. We will be playing a piece or two that requires a piccolo, but in order to justify the cost, I wonder if anyone knows of a place to go to get good solo music or brass quintet music the includes the piccolo trumpet. Are there good study books written specifically for the piccolo trumpet?

A good method book for piccolo is the piccolo trumpet big book. It has some great excerpts in it. Wynton Marsalis has a CD titled "In Gabriels Garden." It has some excellent playing, and the sheet music is available. If I am not mistaken the sheet music does not include the Brandenburg #2, but that piece is readily available elsewhere.

Also buy books of orchestral excerpts. There are generally pieces for piccolo and also any trumpet part written in D can be easily transposed for the A piccolo.

Clyde Hunt has some excellent arrangements for Hymn Descants for piccolo trumpet also.

Hopefully this will be a good start for you. Go ahead and buy the piccolo. It will be a nice addition for the brass quintet and one can never have too many trumpets.

Re. picc method books -- from an old TPIN post:

"The" books for picc are the Hickman and Webster books. They provide plenty
of practice material and a wealth of other information. I got mine from
Tromba Press, run by a former teacher of TPIN's own Schilke Loyalist (and
one of my teachers) Jim Donaldson. He has a web site -- see the ITG links
hub for the URL (I don't have it saved).

The Piccolo Trumpet Big Book, ed. by David R. Hickman, Tromba Press (303)
322-8608
The Piccolo Trumpet -- Duets, Etudes, Orchestral Excerpts, ibid

Method for Piccolo Trumpet, Volumes 1 & 2, Gerald Webster, The Brass Press

Yep,
Don did it again. He beat me to it. The Hickman and Webster books are pretty much THE "Bibles" of picc playing. Get them and you won't regret it (They're actually pretty cheap, too).

I forgot... For music, a couple of quickies are:

Heroic Music, by Telemann, Biladout (sp) ed.

The books by Susan Mitchell-Wallace (organ) and John Head (Principal, Atlanta) are good for material. I have three, but don't have the titles at hand. I think they're The Classical Wedding, The Joyous Wedding, and From Humility to Hallelujah.

Lots of others, but that'll provide some good solo material for starters.

Magic: We have posters from your side of the pond who will hopefully chime in, but you might also want to check the Tromba website and see if they ship overseas. To find the URL (and much more) go to the ITG web site and follow resources -- links hub -- music publishers.
