I've recently figured out that in many ways I love the feel of the 5C. Response is easy and I have a pure, even sound through all registers. However, the upper harmonics seem a little muffled so I hesitate to actually play it. Any suggestions for a different backbore, equivalent piece from another maker, etc?

Jason,
I played on a 5c for many years and found the upper register 'stuffy' too. I liked the rim so I wanted something similar. I found that Warburton was a perfect fit. And you can change backbores for any situation. For legit, a 5MD with 10 bb- and lead 5SV with Q bb work for me.
Peace,
-Dennis

I was actually talking more about liveliness of the sound than stuffiness, but I would certainly take a mouthpiece that freed up the upper register more, and I know the Warburtons I've played all seemed to have good resonance. I'll have to check those combinations out. Thanks for the suggestions.

I like the Curry 5M for everyday stuff.

Bill Adam always sounded fine in the high register on his 5C.

I've never liked the Bach 5C (or the 7C, either). Mouthpieces are like that - one person's treasure is another person's trash. It's more of a question of which mouthpiece matches your mouth and your horn.

I actually like it up high and have used it for my pic mouthpiece for a while. It just doesn't have quite the overtone presence of other mouthpieces I play. Obviously if Bill Adam plays one that's not a problem inherent in the horn though. Maybe I'll just play it for a while and see if I find the sweet spot better. There were some times I was playing it today when it seemed to coome to life a little more.

Jason, do you guess if you worked on it exclusively for a predetermined period the stubborn overtones in the the upper register might become audible?

The pure even sound in other registers taking over in that one?

Just a thought.

Ditto on gap from the poster 1 down from me.

Make sure the gap is correct.

Jason, have you tried any of Karl Hammond's mouthpieces? Perhaps a 6ML or 6MLx? I would characterize his mouthpieces as in the Bach tradition, but with a little more sparkle or zing to the tone. These might not be quite what you want, but I think they'd be worth trying.

Try Laskey's 60MC. The 60C is the 5C equivilent while the 60MC is a little shallower and livlier. I heard the 60MC was for Doc Severnson, also a 5C fan.

I played a 5A for many years, and when I first started my comeback, got a 5C and 5D with the idea of staying with that rim. Neither were nearly as good in the (abeit limited) upper register as the 5A. It didn't dawn on me until after I had sold them that my 5A was modified with a reamed out throat, which is probably why they both got so thin above first ledger A.

Ditto on the Warburton suggestion. The combinations are almost endless (OK, an exageration, there are a finite number of combinations) and are the most consistent in rim size of any brand I've tried.
