Earplugs......Trumpet Ensemble is one of the most dreadful sounding ensembles!

No, really....make sure that you are playing with players who you respect and can carry their weight. Blend is the key! Emphasize good sound, good intonation....'cuz it can sound really RAW (8 trumpets together).

Let everyone have their say....make it a group effort....there will be times when you will need to do things you don't want to or don't agree with. Don't let any one person lead the ensemble.

Hi Bartok,

True......regarding the earplugs. It is not easy putting EIGHT trumpeters together and sound good. Will work on intonation with them. Thanks for your advice!

I beg to differ.
I have found that the trumpet ensemble is the best way to learn to ply the instrument there is, and as much fun as you can have playing the horn.

1. The group can lear to play in tune and get a blended sound. The trend is that the weaker players learn to match the stronger. Playing open intervals, and working with the resultant tones, can transform the way a player hears. Articulations tend to match with practice.

2. There is much good literature for the group. Some of it even published. (Check out my version of the Barber of Seville" for seven trumpets (Manduca). I have also done Poet and Pessant, and the Prelude to Act III of Lohengrin. Almost any canzona will work with trumpets alone. I have prepare a number o Gabrieli works fo 4 - 14 trumpets. They all work. You can do it yourself also. Download a midi version orf them, load them into Finale. Put all the parts in tremble clef. Pick a suitable key, and transpose the the parts that go too low up and octave.

The choral sound of trumpets is one of the mot glorious things I have ever heard. I will be happy to send some midi versions to any who ask for them.

I will be happy to eamail very good trumpet choir transcrptions of Gabrieli for the asking. The will be in Finale 2003 or MIDI.

You can take some of the "edge" out of things by encouraging the use of flugelhorns and cornets.

Have Fun!

Hey,

Just for fun, do buglers holiday with as many people you have. Or have the rest play the accomp. and play it as a solo.

That would be fun.
