I've been experimenting some with this concept of less air. I was brought up in the blow-your-brains-out tradition, and always had a big sound until I got into the high C+ range, and then it thinned out considerably, most often in performance situations, less so when practicing. I finally started paying attention to what I was doing in practice when things were working, and lo and behold, it all involves tongue placement and air volume. I'm not fully into the TCE thing, but using the tip of the tongue to channel the air and doing the spit buzz thing away from the horn seem to be producing good results. Yesterday I drilled a double C--something I've done before, but usually not with the same embouchure that got a decent sound down low. This time I started on the DHC and went down the scale all the way to pedal C, and then slurred back up. And the pressure I used for the DHC was about equal to the pressure I would normally use an octave lower. I'm definitely on to something. I'll fiddle with it some more and report back in a few weeks. _________________ Bryan Fields

Roger does the yoga breath or 'wedge' that he learned from Bobby Shew which interestingly he says was influenced by Bud Brisbois. When I saw that video I was like "that's exactly what Jim was showing in the video I posted!"
This video of Roger is great. It's kind of the same approach but there is one big difference - Roger is playing with an fairly open aperture and Jim uses a very small aperture (like Cat Anderson did)... any comments, advices, et. on this?
