I've been in a Reggae state of mind lately. Can anyone recommend any recent recordings of Reggae bands that groove and of course have some killer horns?

Ya' know, most reggae tunes won't really go crazy with horn work. If too much exciting stuff makes its way in, the songs usually end up picking up a little speed in the recording session, and becoming ska-like.

However, there are noticeable horn lines in several songs by Bob Marley, Steel Pulse, some stuff by Sublime, and some others. A lot of the modern stuff is tending to wander closer to the hip-hop genres, using different studio effects and such, rather than having more people in the booth recording. I like Damian Marley's stuff, for instance, but there's a total dearth of horns in it.

One thing I should probably add, since I touched on the topic a second ago, is that you might want to try some of the slow tunes by groups that label themselves under other genres. Reel Big Fish (ska) does some nice reggae tunes, for instance. Jamaica Jazz Allstars is another good bet (they do jaz tunes with a reggae background). If you do some searching, which Youtube is amazing for, you can find some great stuff.

There's a Regge band in Eastern New Hampshire (coastal area) that's been advertizing for a trumpet player for months. Beach gigs. Personally, I fall asleep from Regge music, so it doesn't have much appeal...

http://www.myspace.com/theaggrolites

When I first read the title of the topic I thought you meant good horns to play reggae music with. Like, yeah a Calicchio is good for Reggae or a Bach 43 sounds great on Marley tunes ! Nevermind...

you should look into socca music by bands like Arrow, Byron Lee and the Dragonaiers, etc. It is caribbean music, a lot more high energy with some sick horns stuff....

You should listen to Rebelution.
The album "Bright Side of Life" has alot of tasty horn work in it. Although not very complicated, it makes the music come to life which is what i think horn sections should do.

It's not technically reggae, I think it's called "zouk" actually, but there is a group (actually formed in France, iirc) called Kassav' that has some horn writing in it, for example one called Se Dam Bonjou that I remember from a while back.

It's fairly unheard of here, since the lyrics are French. I ran across it in a club in Paris with relatives years ago.

Ooklah the Moc - Hell Fire has some sweet licks

New Zealand group, Katchafire's album Say What You're Thinking has some great tracks like Meant to Be.

There's also a group Pacific Dub - they had some sweet tracks...
