It looks like he stuffed his Monette piece into a borrowed non-Monette horn. The Mpc looks like it is sticking out farther than usual and the tuning slide is in pretty far. Also, while he was warming up at the beginning of the clip it sounded like he was fishing around to see where the intonation of the horn was in elation to how things feel naturally. _________________ Bb: mt. vernon bach ML 37

I could not load the clip, but I know of one instance where Wynton came out West to do a gig in Pasadena and his horns didn't make it. He (his people) called Kanstul to see if they could loan him a horn, but they could not get one to him in time. Charles suggested that they call Fergusson Music to see what they could do.
Steve loaned him a Yamaha Artist (I'm not sure of the actual model) that Wynton picked out as the darkest horn there. Perhaps, this is that occasion?
BTW, I had the chance to play some horns there at Fergusson's just after that. Mike handed that Yamaha to me to try. It was a day or two later that Charles told me that I had played the Wynton loaner horn. He thought I was probably the very next guy to play it. IDK. Pretty nice horn.

There is one reason that I practice: to be ready at the downbeat when the final trumpet sounds. |

Whatever it is, it sounds like it needs a new spit valve cork. Nice playing, though. _________________ Crazy Nate - Fine Yet Mellow Fellow

Not a V1. My first guess would be a Taylor, except that the Bach-like stop on the bottom of the 3rd slide doesn't exist on Taylor horns. I'm stumped. My guess is that he using a borrowed horn for this demo.

The acoustics and/or recording setup is not optimal, and that should be taken into account. It's probably some concrete college dungeon room. |

I love how you can openly critique Wynton's tone at every turn.
Walk the walk.... talk the talk?
I don't see much walking. |
Be fair, that's like saying that one has no right to comment that the Detroit Lions defense needs some tackling practice unless you are a pro football player. _________________ Either is fine. My chops always feel great

Don't begin to compare the Lions to Wynton. We could start a real war there! "If Wynton was a football team which one would he be?"
Until then I'll get back to practicing. _________________ http://austincustombrass.biz

I bet Wynton is sitting back having a good laugh at this thread.
What's the big deal?

He is a great player for sure.
Personally I don't care for the dark spread sound.... but that's just me.
Peace

I can walk just fine. And I like the things Mr. Marsalis plays. He has great imagination and technique. I also like the resonant, ringing sound of the trumpet. _________________ Crazy Nate - Fine Yet Mellow Fellow

Well, Trent sent me a PM. I'm pasting my response to close out my participation in this thread:
Trent,
I like the way Wynton Marsalis plays. I do not care for the Monette concept of sound produced by the instruments, and even the mouthpieces when played on regular trumpets. That includes when you played them. Ithink Marsalis sounded better (tone only) when he played the Bach. Ican appreciate a soloist with whatever voice they choose to express themselves. I can express my opinion on a public forum. What I think doesn't matter a hill of beans. What do you think? _________________ Crazy Nate - Fine Yet Mellow Fellow

PS: The highest compliment I can give to any musician is that he has a distinctive tone like no one else. Trane, Miles, Santana, you name it.
Wynton also has that. Love the tone (ME) or hate it (Nate) that's pretty deep musically. To me Wynton didn't have that on the Bach. I think his trumpeting was excellent on the Bach...
In days where everyone sounds like Phil Smith, Bud, or Freddie I think it's a noble idea to have your own tone. I don't think I'll ever get there.
YMMV,
