PS: The highest compliment I can give to any musician is that he has a distinctive tone like no one else. Trane, Miles, Santana, you name it.
Wynton also has that. Love the tone (ME) or hate it (Nate) that's pretty deep musically. To me Wynton didn't have that on the Bach. I think his trumpeting was excellent on the Bach...

In days where everyone sounds like Phil Smith, Bud, or Freddie I think it's a noble idea to have your own tone. I don't think I'll ever get there.

YMMV,

Couldn't have said it better myself.

Wynton is pure amazing. I have been lucky enough to see him several times and the sound/tone he can get without amplification is amazing.

He's using an stc3 weight mouthpiece on a non monette trumpet... isn't that punishable by death or 7 years of torture or something.

Wynton is actually playing his usual horn here. The "apparent" horn has been dubbed in a la the Letterman clip.

Maybe some kid asked Wynton if he/she could play his horn and Wynton swapped for the masterclass as a bit of a thing to give the kid a buzz and inspiration.

I'm sure we are all curious of Wynton's equipment and would happy to swap for a couple of hours.

Saw him Thursday night at Jazz at Lincoln Center for the Monk tribute concert. Had his Monette. My god, he sounded great. Wonderful night and great music.

Well, Trent sent me a PM. I'm pasting my response to close out my participation in this thread:
Trent,
I like the way Wynton Marsalis plays. I do not care for the Monette concept of sound produced by the instruments, and even the mouthpieces when played on regular trumpets. That includes when you played them. Ithink Marsalis sounded better (tone only) when he played the Bach. Ican appreciate a soloist with whatever voice they choose to express themselves. I can express my opinion on a public forum. What I think doesn't matter a hill of beans. What do you think?

Nate,

Excellent reply. thanks for clearing up my issues I had with your post.

I'd really like to hear some of these people who have the "I liked Wynton better on Bach" opinion take a blind test of Wynton on his different horns and see if they could really pick out which was which. Wynton's sound is his alone, regardless of horn selection.

I have seen and heard him live ( because I support live jazz whenever possible, of course) a few times, mostly in small clubs like Scullers in Boston and the Iron Horse in NoHo. Can't remember what he was playing at Scullers, but it may have been a Bach... just don't recollect. but, at the Iron Horse, I was near the platform and then he walked from table to table and played to the patrons. He was using a basic Monette (don't know the model names/numbers). The piece I like was it was noticeably beat up and I remember thinking.... "Hmmm , his New Orleans lineage just can't be hidden". It didn't look as bad as Tuba Fats ' horn, but it sure had some dings and more on the bell... and, like Fats, he sounded great on it. Having heard him play, I sure would like to sit down and be part of a conversation with him and a few others. So bright, so much to say, so unflinching in his ability to speak his mind. Hey, I'd love to sit in on one of the kids things he does. I remember seeing him at Scullers and some young folks came in and sat along the back wall and he lit up and talked directly to them and made them feel like thay had made his night... and they probably had. Talk about playing to the back of the room. Anyway, can you tell I like him?

This "sudden" change of axe sparked off a lively thread. Why? I'm not sure. Because its not unususal for any of us to occasionally play a fresh horn every now and then! The quote above, about sitting in on WM's kids sessions has been lifted from Mr Supportlivejazz's contribution, could be the reason why WM is not playing his "bread and butter" horn. The Marciac Masterclass sessions that this clip appears to be taken from are primarily attended by kids (watch WM play "Happy birthday" on youtube..... it always makes me smile), and how many of you out there would endorse having your main horn in a room full of giddy teenagers, running the risk that tonights "paying" gig could be wrecked cos yr main horn got dinged and the valves packed up.
Why is he playing a different horn? I dunno. Do I care? Not really. In the grand scheme of things does it matter? Unlikely! He could be playing a "Jolly Sun" chinese import for all I care, and still he makes a fine job of it (please, this isnt a cue to start another thread comparing the virtues or otherwise of Chinese imports).

I think it's just some beautiful playing. What a great clip. He has ideas that just come from a whole 'nother universe. Too bad the camera guy gets in the way!

Certainly looks like the Yamaha Artist series..... conspicuous absence of upper register though..... Sean can really make that think scream
