From crazy trumpet players. They buy a great new horn and 2 months later think its the instrumnet from hell and they trade it in for the next honeymoon with a new horn.

Crazy trumpet players.......I heard some actually hang around here....

...then you have your chet baker factor of musicians who sell horns to meet immediate needs.
there's a lot of reasons why trumpets have a brisk turnover, a player progressing and finding out the limitations of a horn, trumpets tending to be demanding instruments to play, getting a different idea of what your sound should be...chuck

For example, I have a wonderful, lightly used Courtois trumpet out for sale, but wanted to go in a different direction with a more "commercial" and aggressive kind of sound. Some had said I wasn't being heard above electric guitars in church...now I do not have that problem, and have to "dial it back" a little.

My 2c.

Not being heard over the guitars is more of a sound guy issue than a new trumpet issue. After all they could always put a mike on you.

However, then you wouldn't have had the opportunity to go on a horn safari.

...my favorite excuse to get a new horn is 'hey, beause it's tuesday'...i think dillon's gets a lot of that, or they steal them from somewhere...either way, i don't have time to find our right now...because it's tuesday...

They also get them from trades. They give very good prices for horns in trade so if you ever want to "trade up" ,Dillon's is where to go.

Absolutely true--but what is it about church sound techs (at least where I've been playing) that they hardly put any mic gain at all on a trumpet, but the electric guitars are screaming loud?

Anyhow, in the one church I was playing once a month, they called me into a room and said "trumpet doesn't even fit 5 songs we do" and that no horns would fit...so I was axed. It didn't matter that many in the congregation liked it (and some said they could hardly hear me and that I should play out more).

So I determined nobody would ever be able to say they didn't hear me again, and got a new horn. Good excuse for a horn safari? Yeah.

Perhaps now the joke is on those church bozos. Tonight I have a second audition for a "professional" brass quintet. Granted, they don't make much money, and most goes to pay for music and supplies or gas money, but they do get paid to play.

My friend/teacher and I will be going to Dillon's one of these days in the next few months to shop trumpets.

John

Well, they got some from me. I'm amazed and delighted by their inventory.

And some from guys like me, who are obsessive-compulsive when it comes to taking care of horns.
They are GREAT guys to deal with, i.m.o.

Just politely point out that it was decided LONG AGO...that when GABRIEL puts forth on his Heavenly Trumpet...there ARE NO guitar parts.

Yes, but in a metaphysical interpetation of the Bible, a trumpet = guitar. What really happened at Jericho was that when the inhabitants heard the terrible sound of the electric guitars, powered by the Arch of the Covenant, they fled the city, and in their desperate haste they trampled down the walls.

Dillons does have an amazing selection of horns available. I got my first Martin from there as well as my Blackbyrd. There is a Bach they've got that I've my eye on ....
The sales staff is great!

look, i know i have said this a lot, but Dillon's is simply the BEST in the buissness. People know that if they consign their horn to Dillon's it is going to get sold at a decent price, and sold quickly. The amount of foot traffic through that place is amazing. If you ever get there, do not go on a saturday....you wont be able to find a seat to play. Its great to have a place to go as a 17 year old student, where you are treated as a customer, not as a juvenile that needs to be watched. I go with a friend every couple months to play, and see what they have.

Like Mr. Dillon said.....they come from all over.....nuff said.....

I like that they keep their prices relatively low, not all online sellers can do that. The only other place I can think of is quality-brass which has kind of nasty pictures on their website, but are very helpful when you email them.

...I've bought horns from Fred at Quality Brass and would say that he is a real gentleman to work with. He's very ethical and honest about what is and isn't with the horn.
I'd easily say the same about the crew over at Dillons. I got my early 60's King Silversonic from them and was (and still am) extremely happy with it and their service. I'd buy from either of them again. While I'm talking about online shops, I've also had a very positive buying experience with John at the Trumpet Trader.

I disagree. I like going there on a Saturday. A lot of people, a lot of energy!

Exactly what I did when I jumped off the Bach Boat and hopped on to the Yamaha Cruise Ship.
