I picked up what I believe is a 1922 Conn 24B on Ebay through a "make an offer" and after hearing back from Chuck Ward (thouroughly nice guym by the way), it looks like old Connie is going to pass over to the land of misfit horns.
Needs about $1100.00 worth of restoration and that seems above and beyond the value of the horn especially as I have never played a note on it and have no sentimental attachment to the horn.
I don't feel right selling the horn as a trumpet so i am not posting in the marketplace or putting on Ebay, if someone here could use it for parts or wants to try a restoration, just shoot me a PM.
Defects: needs valve job, no tuning slide spit valve nipple, many small dents and dings, even on the tubing between valves, leadpipe is cheesecake with redrot holes (you could play it like an ocarina), horn has been severely buffed, one bottom cap has chip in mother of peral inlay, several braces look to have been resoldered poorly, third valve tuning ring seems to be way too far from valve block, but original, missing main tuning slide stop rod and nut. first slide pull knob missing.
Glorius Wonderful Features: beautiful copper lower valve casings, nice valve caps, buttons and 2 of 3 bottom caps, new spit valve corks
I am not 100% that this is a 24B though it has the tight bell flare and looks most like a 24B from the connloyalist.com , the second valve slide points striaght out rather than being angled forward or back. I e-mailed Christine about the model but haven't heard back, so I am guessing it may be mystery model. The bore measured at the second valve is .4380 to .4385.
You can see original auction pics here:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=250302278836&ssPag

I offered $125, he was asking $200 BIN, so I am not out much and the photos and description were acurate, I was just a bit optimistic in my idea of how cheap it would be to make right again.
I took many pics before sending to Chuck Ward if you want more pics just ask.

Dave

Ouch! I had been watching that one and was glad it went to someone in the "family". If I had the $, I'd offer to take it off your hands and just get the major damage fixed and call it good. But alas, I made a similarly optimistic move one a cornet recently.

Anybody know an inexpensive tech who does valve (nickel) replating/lapping in addition to your typical soldering and dent removal?

Where do old Conns go to die??? Far too many of them seem to go to my house!

Sometimes I feel like I'm running a retirement home rather than collecting instruments.

I watched that auction and due to the heavy buffing declined to bid. Right now I have about 15 pre 1930 Conns that need various parts and pieces, including my own 'mystery horn', a 1911 long cornet that is very similar to either the 2-B or yours. It also has a swiss cheezed leadpipe, needs a valve job, but has a beautiful silver bell with gold inlay. The bell may end up on something else some day.

Good luck finding a good home for that one, as it deserves it.

By the use of CONNdoms, do you prevent little piccolo trumpets? Better a piccolo trumpet then a Flugelhorn which would cause much greater CONNtractions.
Not sure if that type of talk is allow in normal CONNversation.

My CONNdolences to anyone who has to listen to this being read out loud. It's a bit CONNfounding and CONNtrarian to good taste, but a CONNvienent waste of computer cycles.

Does playing a raw brass Vintage One cause CONNdylomas to form on your hand? (google that joke) That would be hard to CONNceal. Yep, you just CONN't stop the music or bad jokes once they start running. The humor's GETZEN a little strange about now.

Okay, time to stop
Where's that valve oil, SNNNNIFFF

You could spend $600 to $1,100 on restoration and end up with a horn worth $250 (probably less). That one's already had enough work done on it. Looks a bit like a botched restoration at some point. Is that gold metallic spray paint? Just let it die a peaceful death. Maybe a proper burial somewhere. Your point about sentimental attachment is a good one. If you are not emotionally invested, dump it.
