I'm not sure if this is normal but when I play higher range, i kinda use my throat a lot, like it looks like it expands but I can't tell when I'm playing I only noticed when I looked in the mirror. Is there a way to get rid of this?
Also when I practice higher range, I feel like I kind of point my air more downward which makes it easier for me but I'm not sure if this is right either.
please leave your thoughts and help, thanks! |

This really is great advice. The more you think about airstream direction, neck puff, lip curl, tongue position etc... the harder it will be to focus on what comes out of the bell. _________________ Yamaha 6310z

go look up a video of bill chase... his neck reminds me of those desert lizards with the big neck frill that fans out when they are feeling threatened. _________________ Stomvi VRII Lightweight in Silver

Puffy neck = good air flow, no closed throat. This is a good thing !
Nothing wrong with playing "down-stream" either. Let the sound be your guide ! Do not be impatient...
When properly developing range, you will find that there are periods of (seeming-less) no progression, the all of a sudden, SNAP, your at the next level! Then you start again...

If indeed you're talking about neck puff then I agree that some is fairly common and in general there's no reason to get rid of it. On the other hand there are a large number of players who rely on pinching their embochure and blowing really hard to play high and loud. If you only rely on brute force in you develpment then it's possible to start working against yourself, even tearing down instead of improving. _________________ "I'm an engineer, which means I think I know a whole bunch of stuff I really don't."

This is so true..............
Some days even a high "C" comes out like slipping fan belt.......
Yesterday It came out like nobody's business......... Clear Tone and easy to duplicate...........
Today? remains to be heard......... |

ok, thanks for all your help guys, I was just worried cuz it might just feel awkward if people watch you play and your neck looks like a balloon lol
its just that when I watch other pros play like allen vizzutti, looks like they aren't even trying so I thought I might've been doing something wrong |

We all play different, we all look different. Some of the best players will get really red in the face when they start working hard, or have a neck puff as well. As long as you're not creating undue tension in the body, it doesn't matter what you look like. Don't sweat it if you don't look like Vizzutti. He's fairly atypical, even for a pro. I don't know if anyone plays with as much ease as him, at least visually. _________________ Trumpets.

Herseth was famous for getting red in the face. There is a story (apochryphal, at best) that Bud and Dizzy G. met once and Dizzy asked Bud why his face got so red. Bud responded with a question: "Why do your cheeks puff out so much?"

It's possible to get a good sound and still be playing inefficiently. I strongly disagree with those who claim you should not look in a mirror or think about what is happening physically. There is frequently room for improvement! |
