I was lucky enough to hear the San Francisco Symphony on tour last night at our hall. They opened with a piece written by MTT for the brass section, then Prokofiev Piano Concerto #5 (kind of an odd piece) followed by Tchaik 5. The orchestra sounded fantastic, the brass were unbelievably good. Very solid, powerful playing, but well balanced. I was particularly impressed with the unity and refinement with which they all played. Low brass rocked. Mark Inouye and company sounded fabulous.
This is an underrated orchestra - I walked away extremely impressed by what I heard. If you get a chance, hear them live.

Agreed! They are highly underrated in discussions around here. I got the privilege to see them live and it was phenomenal...that was 6 years ago. I believe Glen Fischthal was in the hot seat at the time. Such effortless playing. _________________ "I'm 73 and I'm still learning." - Maurice Murphy

I'm privileged to hear them frequently. The brass is getting better,
and they were always good.
Mark Inouye sounds fantastic. The new principal trombone is
wonderful. The brass produces a powerful and clean sound. There is
excitement in their playing.
The woodwinds are better than ever, too.

We caught their show here at Cal Poly and the whole experience was great for our students: Copland, Berg & Tchaik 5. Jeff Biancalana was able to squeeze in a masterclass with our chamber brass groups and he was great with our students.
The brass sounded marvelous and MTT did a great job of introducing the Berg to our audience. _________________ Chris Woodruff

Among others, I've seen them play the Planets, Pictures, and the R. Strauss Vienna Philharmonic fanfare. Each of those concerts was a highlight of my life. _________________ Dave Lindgren of Sonoma, Ca

Last night I caught the concert with Debussy: Prelude to the Afternoon, Stravinsky: Symphony in C, and Sheherazade. I was lucky enough to be in the "conductor's box," fantastic seats. It was such a great show, it really reminded me how much I miss not going to many live performances. Nothing beats a great orchestra live. Mark Inouye is a great principal trumpet! _________________ Daniel Gianola-Norris |

Hey Froggy - I really like your teacher's playing too. He's fantastic on my Blomstedt/SF recordings. But since he is your teacher, you might want to get his first and last named spelled correctly: Glenn Fischthal

Very exciting playing at the SFS gig last night.
The Scheherzade was full of great solo licks all around. |
