While converting my collection of Maynard Albums to Digital the other day I remembered how I once heard Maynard talk about some albums that were out there that he did not authorize. I guess a couple were made by band members during rehearsal and a couple of more were simply compilations. Would any of you guys know which ones are the "illegal immigrants"?

Hope it's not too off-topic, but what software / hardware is needed to convert old albums to digital?
My Dell computer has CD burning ability, but I have no idea how to dub from my turntable onto my computer in the first place so that I can then burn the CD's.

A USB turntable into something like Audacity would do it - you record the input as a WAV file and then you can convert it to any other format you like. Brief, but if you want more help a PM might be the way to do it. My first job was converting vinyl to CD for a local radio station - good times.

If you already own a great turntable (25 years old and works great) what is available to convert the analog signal to digital? I bought all the MF stuff on CD as it became available. [I know, it took forever; that's another story.] But, I have some albums that will probably never be available on CD.

I recall Maynard saying something about bootlegs at the last concert I attended about two years before he died. I know all of mine are official releases. Are there bootlegs that are good enough that they should be released?

Thanks for posting that site. Very interesting options. I have been converting some lp's to CD's for years, with good results from my antiquated permanant system serving my computer activities only.

I have the MusicMatch system which has served me well over the years for different projects. I also have the option of using the Audigy Soundblaster recorder and player, with my older unit that has a very handy front connection panel, making hooking wires from other sources easier.

As a part of the system I have an old Pioneer manual turntable and a Marantz Legacy Series integrated power amp to channel signal in and out of the computer, plus four good speakers.

By hooking output from the amp to the Audigy input (What u hear)mode. I can burn CD's from either application with quality sound. I did so for my old Maynard vinyls and then sold them to someone for a picture project involving the cover art.

I expect the direct connect turntables are easier a bit, but I probably won't bother to do more conversions. I have lots of album's, cassettes and 8 tracks that I like to hear in their original context.

I have a full analog rack and I run a split line off of my pre-amp; one goes to the power amp and the other into the computer using the two RCA jacks on one end and the little stereo jack on the computer end (Radio Shack). The software program (audition/audacity/nero, etc) will convert the incoming wav file for you. It doesn't take much to do this. I prefer Adobe Audition 1.5 as it has loads of extras. Be warned that once you start converting your vinyl you will get hooked and eventually start doing a lot of other stuff. You'll eventually have a small but expensive setup and you will abandon most of your life while you putz around for endless hours in your studio. So now that we have settled that does anyone know specifically the titles of any bootlegged Maynard vinyl???

When Maynard died, I was looking around for a couple of tough to get recordings & found this guy, John Himes in Cypress, California, who runs the "John Himes' Maynard Ferguson Album Emporium"...

http://www.angelfire.com/ca/mferguson/index.html

I don't believe he deals with "illegal recordings", but has an extensive collection & knowledge of MF hard-to-finds/rarities/imports, etc. It's not impossible that he can steer you in the right direction, though, or at least give you some idea of what might be out there for you to look for.

It's probably worth sending him an email through his site.

I have just finished all my Maynard recordings onto my hard drive. That's a total of 35 Albums. I got a Discography on-line to see which albums I am missing and noticed that I had some that were not included: Message from Birdland, Swingin For Schuur, Jazz Masters 52 and a "Wyncote" album labeled "Maynard Ferguson". That's a good list.
How about:
The Essential Maynard Ferguson, Vol 1 and 2.
Double Exposure w/Cris Conner
Jimmy Dorsey and his Orch, featuring Maynard Ferguson . Stardust records
Special Delivery , Tito Puente and Maynard Ferguson
Maynard Ferguson, The lost tapes (sleepynights.com)
On a High Note (best of Concord Jazz Recordings) 2007 compilation.
I used to have that Wyncotte record, also.

Nice list, Scootchy. I used to have a lot of those albums, but had to give most of my vinyls away when we moved overseas the first time. I kept that 1953 album, though.... to those of you who never heard this album, this is the Maynard all the fuss was about. See his Kenton feature on the Ed Sullivan Show on YouTube as well. Unbelievable!

http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=4322712586606322578&ei=VAJGSrrbLsLR-AaBnNH_Bg&q=maynard+ed+sullivan+show&hl=en&client=safari

I prefer to use a Mac running Audio Hijack Pro and Fission (Rogue Amoeba) for vinyl transfer and cleanup, running analog through a Soundcraft Compact 10. This mixer has an RIAA button on one of its input (sort of a DI box for turntables), and gives you a really clean signal at the output. If I encounter a recording that has seen far better days, I will usually take out the big guns and process the audio through Logic or Ableton Live.

Dave

I have a set called "The Complete Roulette Recordings of the Maynard Ferguson Orchestra." It's ten disks of some awesome early maynard stuff. Seems that this particular set has become quite rare, as I have seen it sell for over $500 on ebay.

Great list. I think you have about a dozen albums I don't have, and that I have about a dozen albums you don't have. It's been too long since I've looked over my collection. Time for an inventory.

BTW, you've omitted the soundtrack for "Uncle Joe Shannon", even Wikipedia doesn't mention it. I believe it's long out of print though Amazon claims to have a single copy for $30. Looks like there was a small reissue recently but they say it quickly sold out. (http://www.intrada.net/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=2647&sid=832c6db429e6629c1ebfd5287d85ec59)

Just found this link of additional soundtracks featuring Maynard http://www.angelfire.com/ca/mferguson/SndTrack.html

"Maynardology" is now OVER SIX HUNDRED STRONG, and growing!
It's clear that "Maynard lives..." is becoming a reality. But we're only GETTING STARTED! SO SPREAD THE WORD!
If you love Maynard, and want to preserve his legacy, this is the place to be!

Skootchy: The Wyncote release is legit, it's just a few tracks from MF's 2 releases on Cameo/Parkway.

You still got a ways to go, keep searching!

skootchy.

If it wouldn't be too much trouble, could you list your favorite 4 or 5 MF albums? I'd like to add them to my collection. I have heard that MF 4 & 5 are the best. What do you think?

Regards,
Grits
