I have just finished all my Maynard recordings onto my hard drive. That's a total of 35 Albums. I got a Discography on-line to see which albums I am missing and noticed that I had some that were not included: Message from Birdland, Swingin For Schuur, Jazz Masters 52 and a "Wyncote" album labeled "Maynard Ferguson". (I think it's a compilation and may be a bootleg?) Apparently I have less than half of what's out there. (Bold Print) The thought occurred to me that maybe there are more albums than what is on this list so if you guys know of any others feel free to post the titles.

That's an incredible collection. I had most of those records on LP through Big Bop Nouveau. But stupidly sold them in the late 90s when I needed some cash. I used to go to used record shops and pour through the jazz sections and the new incoming stuff on the hunt for MF stuff I didn't have.

Funny nowadays, just hop over to YouTube, click a button and you can have a listen. But I miss the hunt, and expedition of going to record stores, and talking with live humans. Times have changed for sure.

Again what a great collection you have!

If it wouldn't be too much trouble, could you list your favorite 4 or 5 MF albums? I'd like to add them to my collection. I have heard that MF 4 & 5 are the best. What do you think?

Regards,
Grits

Wow, so hard to do, love them all but going over that list these stood out. Maynard 62
Straughtaway Jazz Themes
Come Blow Your Horn
MF Horn 4+5 Live at Jimmys
Big Bop Nouvea
These Cats Can Swing.

For Maynard rock-era I love the British band stuff.

My favorite is the self titled record with Stony End, Your Song, Bridge Over Troubled Water, Aquarius etc. That album is so raw, I just love it.

And Maynard still had his original teeth, before his sound and chops changed.

My high school played Maynard's Bridge Over Troubled Water and I got to front the band. Mind you I never really had the range so I had to take liberties, but it was still thrilling and terrifying to be playing MF charts back then.

BTW, love that whole album. M.F. Horn 3 is another killer from that period with Awright, Awright being one of my absolute favorite MF tunes.

Yes! For me it's pretty much a tie score of that one, MF Horn 2 and the MF Horn 4 & 5 Live at Jimmy's albums, with an honorable mention going to the rendition of MacArthur Park on the MF Horn album. I LOVE how cleanly he plays that first recording of the song.

Heck yeah, the MF1 MacArthur Park is my favorite as well.

Always loved that octave gloss and trill around 1:27 or so. I only heard that on this recording amongst the zillions of other Mac Park recordings.

That's my fav Maynard album from that era too. My high school jazz band played Nice'n Juicy during my high-school years, and I still like to listen to this track on MF Horn 3 every now and then.

Nice 'n Juicy is the only MF chart that I ever went out of my way to purchase. I bought back when the publisher Creative World was still around.
