Has anyone played the Yamaha YFH-631 (rose brass) flugelhorn. If so, how do you like it? How does it play? Thanks.

It’s a great horn, I highly recommend it. I've had mine for about 9 years. I prefer it over all other, and more expensive, models. It works great in all settings jazz, big band, brass quintet, solos, etc. I had a 3rd slide trigger added after I bought it. |

A very good flugel. If you are in the market for a brand new flugel, I would
also recommend trying the latest Bobby Shew model flugel from Yamaha.
If you want a brand new budget model, the Jupiter is very good too. |

I own one and love it! The rose/red brass really gives it a great mellow flugel sound and it plays as good or better than more expensive flugels. I don't think you can find better value among flugelhorns. |

Ditto.
I bought a very old one in great shape. Mine had been silver plated and the 3rd trigger installed by the previous owner. Coincidently it was exactly the way I wanted it. For me it's just perfect.
Look for a m.piece with Yamaha shank. It makes a big difference.

I have had a 631 for well over 25 years now and it has served me well,
I have never felt a need to buy another flug.
The intonation is excellent on the 631 and as stated above the rose brass bell produces a very beautiful sound. |

I do sometimes borrow the 631 flugel at my music school. I play it with a Denis wick 2 mp. I think that is a better flugel, not the best i have tryed, but definitely one of the better ones. I talked to the office and had them add a trigger on the 3rd valve. That is definitely a good idea. |

I got mine in the early 90s and had a 3rd trigger installed (made by Yamaha but had to give to local tech to install) Great sound. I have read, several years ago, and been told that Allen Vizzutti and Mike Vax used, may still use, this model.

Trent, if I recall correctly, I think I read elsewhere that you and several others love your 631 flugels, but don't feel the same way about the 631G? If this is correct, do you know what Yamaha did differently with the 631G that made you folks feel this way about it?
Thx,

If I do remember corect, I'm not 100% sure, Then is the only difference the triger at the 3rd valve. _________________ Bach Strad 25 L Bb

I think that the differences are that:
-the YFH-631 has a red brass bell and is lacquered. Discontinued in the USA & EU.
-the YFH-631G has a gold brass bell and is lacquered too. Still available.
-the YFH-631GS has a gold brass bell, but is silver plated. Still available.
-the YFH-731 has a yellow brass bell and is silver plated. Discontinued in the USA & EU.
Most new ones come with a third slide trigger, but as it is not always the case you'd better check with the shop first. Older models didn't have a trigger, but Yamaha trigger kits could/can be ordered.
The dimensions of these 4 models are the same: .433" bore with 6" bell.
They all have bottom spring valves.
Odd balls (less known Yamaha models):
The YFH-635T is a .413" small bore model with 6" bell that came before the Shew YFH-6310Z and was made between '86 and '97.
Most people will know the YFH-436G intermediate rotary flügelhorn, but.....
the YFH-601W is a top-class, traditional Vienna style rotary flügel with no triggers and no water keys.

Great info, Maarten, thank you. So, if some folks prefer the 631 over the 631G, it's due to the 631 having a rose brass bell versus the 631G having a gold brass bell?

I had a 631 from the 1979 to 1994. Bought it new. Great sound, horrible valves. The cursed Yamalloy valves. I spent lots of money and time over the years trying to get the valves right. Very finicky, and eventually I gave up. When I sold it in 1994, I tried the Kanstul with the rose bell, and Getzen, and choose a fabulous Bach 183 which I still play.

I changed the springs in mine and it works great. If you try compressing the springs when the tension of the valves are tight, I found it works real well...smooth like chris botti...i mean like butter. _________________ Joe Pino

I'm just kidding around about the Chris Botti comment at the end of my last post. He really is an amazing trumpet player. He has amazing technique, and very clean (no crack or clams). I really dig his current stuff. _________________ Joe Pino
