Even though I have never seen him live, I always thought that Dave Stahl was a type IIIA.

Now a friend of mine who is well versed in the Pivot System tells me that he thinks Stahl could be a IIIB. My friend has seen Dave play live several times, and has also had a private lesson with him.

He says that it looks like Dave pulls down for the high register and that his placement is around half and half.

Sounds like a IIIB to me......Is there anybody who had seen Dave playing LIVE who know FOR SURE what type he is.

I was trying to delete the above post, but for some reason my login won't stick. I go to the main Forum page and hit login, then once I've done it and it goes back to the main Forum page, it says I'm not logged in. Am I the only one this happens to?

So, the next best thing was to post under this knucklehead's post so that it's not the last thing you see in the Reinhardt Forum.

I played with Dave Stahl many times between 1982 & 1984 — I was seated in the trombone section so I wasn't watching him play. But he parted my hair hundreds of times, and it was always a pleasure.

That guy was so accurate, and never one to hot-dog the lead book. He played exactly what was written with impeccable time, articulation, dynamics, feel . . . and those stupid band leaders who hold the last note fermata forever . . . I never once heard Dave run out of breath on a long last note.

The couple of quintet gigs I did with him I'm sorry to report that I wasn't observing his chops trying to determine what type he was.

Rich

I was about to give it to this idiot, but then I thought why even dignify such a stupid post.

In the future, I will be able to eliminate troll-posts as soon as possible.

Our best policy is to not acknowledge such posters . . . it only encourages them.

Hi,

I don't post on this forum because I'm one of those "other guys." Naturally however, I do "drop by" every once in a while to read and learn in a respectful manner.

Sorry to hear about your bout with a flamer. This is uncalled for in any private forum!

Keep up the great work fellas!

Warmest regards,

Tom Turner

Tom, you're always welcome here. You write some of the most thoughtful and generous posts on the Trumpet Herald and I value all of your contributions!

Rich

P.S. Are you going to sell me your "extra" Boston 3-star or what?

Hi Rich,

Well . . . I could send it to you to evaluate! If you like it we could work something out maybe. Those Boston cornets are nice horns!

The horn was restored by Rich Ita and is nearly pristine in finish with its very nice original Boston case, accessories, mouthpiece, etc. When he sent it back to me Rich said, "Tom, I think you'll like this one as well as your first Boston (that I bought from him)."

Uncle Sam hit me really hard this year!

Tom

PS: I'm also contemplating selling a 1939 Conn 80A Victor cornet (silver/frosted silver w/ goldwash bell) in really fine shape too. It's had a chem-clean, new valve and spit valve corks installed and a valve alignment.

Better yet . . . it has the super-rare "Professional" case (I've been offered as much for the case as most vintage 80As sell for) with the original Harry Glanz signature model Conn mouthpiece and accessories. This horn screams and slots to triple C and plays like a dream!

Excuse me, anotherfakewhowantstostiruptrouble. Please offer positive input into topics or choose not to say anything at all. I'm sure some people have already done what they can to completely ignore you, including blocking you. I've chosen not to block or ignore you because you might actually end up giving good advice sometime down the road. I've seen it happen before.

Please ignore all negative, inappropriate posts from trolls.

I deleted several that were designed to cause trouble, and will continue to do so as long as they have nothing positive to contribute.

Since when is saying someone can play their rear off a bad
thing?

So now you have to post that DS plays the notes on the page,
is accurate, has good phrasing.... (That is playing ones rear
off.)

Or perhaps it was DS is a nice guy too, that offended you.

Maybe you considered it off topic and demanded something
Reinhardt related in it.

But then there was nothing Reinhardt related in your response
to me.

Some people look as hard as they can to find fault and insult.
Others look for the good in things. The choice is always yours
to make.

Oh I see this is the come and get insulted forum.

Yep I really deserved being called a troll in posts still up on your forum. Of course you have the power to keep on deleting everything that puts you in a bad light.

Not the complete series, I see. Who's causing the problems around here?

The Dr. Donald S. Reinhardt guys who are here for the purpose stated in the Index know that you're nothing but an immature little trouble maker. But I'll leave that post here so we can see that you're presenting incomplete evidence.

What is it like to have nothing better to do than to try to cause trouble to others?

Mr. Knucklehead, you know good and well that your smart remark about type was completely unnecessary and had nothing to do with the 9 Embouchure Types (4 types and 5 sub-types) in the Pivot System. You are merely here to cause trouble, as your user name states, and I can't believe I'm responding again.

Go ahead and keep trying to make me look bad. I am finished posting on this, both in this forum and on the Fundamentals forum.

You, my misguided "friend," are a severely troubled chap, and I feel sorry for you.

Rich

I understand now. You never said what bugged you in your posts.

You thought I was poking fun at pivot types.

Not at all. You jumped the gun there. I really have nothing but respect for everything Dr. Reinhardt did. Very few people spent their lives and helped trumpet players that much.

Incomplete yes but inorder.
I presented all of the posts I was presented with in a PM. The guy had stopped saving them by then I guess.

Man this TH place must be rough if people keep jumping at conclusions so fast. Did you guys have some kinda war here?

Forgive us for being a little defensive.

Doc Reinhardt was probably the most misunderstood brass teacher of all time, and that's so ironic when you consider the lengths he went through to try to avoid being misunderstood.

But "a little knowledge is a dangerous thing" and if you only take bits and pieces of the Pivot System you're in for a rough road . . . that's been my experience, anyway.

Thanks for working with us on this.

Be good!

Rich

Really I understand now.

Yes I always thought he didn't get 1/10 the credit he deserved. And others who didn't seem to really deserve any credit were praised.

I have been on this thing a few days now and have been reading lots of the back threads on this forum. (Old retired coot with nothing better to do.)

Sorry we got off on the wrong foot.

About the name I was reading a thread about fake names the day before I finally decided to signup. IT was so funny that I picked this one.

One last thing just what is a troll? Or are we better off just forgetting it?
Never mind the troll thing. Just seems like a really low creature.

Looking forward to reading about Dr. Reinhardt's ideas from people who knew him.

P.S. Sorry about the labels (some would call them names) . . . forgive me?

Sure.

I'm sorry also.

I was glad to see on the other thread about jazz players; that someone besides me still liked cornet. I was starting to feel like I should be extinct.

Um...I don't want to intrude, but could we get back to the question that was originally posted? Is Dave Stahl a IIIB? If he is, that means that there is hope for me because I'm IIIB too.

One thing is for certain: Dave has unbelievable chops! He's clean and accurate with an awesome sound, and has great range, control, flexibility and intonation. What else could a trumpet player want?

Every type is capable of developing monstrous chops.

You just can't try to play in a manner that is contrary to your natural physical makeup.
