What are your experiences with the Bobby Shew Soloist harmon mute? I'm thinking about getting one, but I can't decide if I should get that or a Jo-Ral. _________________ Bb: Bach 72 w/ 25 LR leadpipe

I love harmon mutes - so I have 7 at the moment. Regular Harmon brand in aluminum and copper (both are my oldest harmons), Humes and Berg, Dennis Wick aluminum, Jo-Ral in aluminum and copper and the Bobby Shew. The Shew is by far the most expensive and by far the heaviest. However it is not the best sounding to my tastes. The Shew is also the hardest to fit to a horn and has a tendency to fall out more than any mute I have ever had. The Jo-Ral copper has a warmer sound while still giving you the ability to play with an edge. I use the Jo-Ral or Harmon aluminum for Big Band section work, the Jo-Ral or Harmon copper for solos, the Wick for legit, the H&B for 20's/30's jazz, and the Shew in my studio just because I own it. If you have the money to buy the Shew my belief is you would be better served buying the Jo-Ral in both aluminum and copper. Less expensive and more versatile. |

I have a Shew Soloist and love it. It really depends on what kind of sound you are after - this one produces a deep, dark, and thick buzz. As trumphat mentioned, it is one of the heaviest copper mutes out there. Also, no surprise that it works great for solo purposes, and doesn't blend as well with other kinds of harmon mutes. I keep a standard aluminum harmon for section work. Also, it happens to fit the 6310Z/8310Z Yamaha trumpets perfectly (I wonder why ). so you might have to trim the cork to get it to fit snugly in other horns. _________________ Dave Wondra

Way too heavy!!!! So much so that it makes the horn a chore to hold up. Also, the mute kept falling out of the bell. Corks probably needed trimmimg but for $100 I wasn't about to experiment. I use the Jo-Ral alluminum and love it. I also have 3-4 more, including the Best Brass, but they don't get too much playing time.
Hey, dave...how are you getting on with that Shew!!!!

You may want to ask Bobby. Last I heard he isn't planning on manufacturing any more himself - he would know if anyone still has a few Soloists in stock. His email address is: bobbyshew@mac.com _________________ Dave Wondra

He (Bobby) also recommends the Emo mute (which you can't find ANYWHERE)....and an alternative to that...the H&B "WeeZee". This is a terrific mute. No stem...but great sound. This mute, you should be able to find online. _________________ Brad Wilcox

I'd second that recommendation. I used to have an Emo and it played GREAT. _________________ Jeff Helgesen

I have read some raves here about the Best Brass mute. What is it you like better about the Jor-Ral than the best brass?
